"Take your hands off that cow," said L.J., in a ready-at-it tone. He stared at the carriage driver, the driver standing next to the cart.
"Oh," the driver turned around in surprise, "and who might you be, sir?"
"I'm your damned worst nightmare, you piece of scum."
L.J. moved in to punch the man square in the jaw. The driver fell to the ground, unconscious. L.J. turned around to face the woman, the driver's wife probably, still on the cart behind the cow.
"Thank you, whoever you are," she said and faced away in shame.
L.J. nodded once and turned away, walking erect and intent towards the dying sun in the distance.
