Chapter Two

My body slipped off in one fluid motion, the back of my legs scratched against the edge of my home, but I did not feel myself falling.

I had tried to move my arms, because my brain screamed for me to grab onto something. I was stiff and unable to move, my body still but plunging through the thin air. Heat swathed my muscles, but it was a soft heat and I let myself feel it; unknowingly shutting my eyes.

My silent pleas ceased and I waited to hit the ground; but the ground never came. My eyelids were heavy, and while they moved, they still seemed to refuse to open. As an ending result, I realised I could not tell the difference between them being open or closed, since everything around me was darkness.

Something warm rhythmically brushed over the side of my face and I could feel someone’s hands on my back. I was being held by someone; very closely. I did not like sharing personal space. It was personal for a reason, but at the moment I didn’t care how close I was to them, as long as they weren’t too far away.

I could sense myself being carried upwards. A thought nagged in my mind, telling me was dead, but I pushed it away because right now the only thing that could be thought of was the warmth that embraced me. The hands soothingly rubbed circles on my back, caressing my skin and I sensed my mind shutting down. Maybe I was dying. But if I was, this was my angel. A smile crept onto my lips and the cheek that was pressed to my own rose as if they were smiling too.

It was a feeling I hadn’t experiences before and I was lucky to have the chance. My skin tingled, starting on my abdomen and spreading quickly over the rest of me. I was still but couldn’t feel anything but a humming through my body. To me, I was non-existent and anything I had ever suffered left until I could only sense peace. My outstretched fingers dug into the pine needles that littered the floor below me.

They pricked into the side of my cheek which lay on the cool surface.  Once my body could move again, I could feel every one of those pine needles.  Each one making its presence be known.  I was on the ground, but not in a hurry to get up.  A looseness sat inside my chest and this was something I was not familiar with.  But I couldn’t get enough of it.

The feeling ended abruptly when I heard talking.  My muscles constricted back into their normal tightness.

“What am I to say to her?”  A woman spoke, but she sounded mechanical and there was no emotion left in her hollow sounding voice.

I patiently waited for a reply from whom she was speaking too, but there never was one.  The woman only spoke again.

“Would you like me to explain everything?”  After hearing her speak a second time I could detect some feeling, but it was masked away well.  Something I could hear, since I did the same thing regularly.

Now I was curious and it gave me a reason to get up, but I continued to wait.  My mind was foggy and I could not get my eyes to fixate on any one thing.  The greenery in front of me becoming so sharp to the point of where my eyes burned and I closed them tightly.  My fingers wrapped into my hair, tangling until it hurt. I struggled to open my eyes and I did so slowly. The crisp air stung but the sharpness was gone.

I rolled onto my back slowly and sat up. Propping my elbows under me to help me up. My head spun but I continued to sit up until I did not need my arms anymore.
