She didn't know where she was going, but she just kept running. Running and running and running. Away from the horrors that only she could see. They had only revealed their true nature to her. To everyone else, they are harmless, sweet even. But she knows better.
"Where is it? Where is the experiment?" she hears them shouting in fury behind her. She shouldn't have been able to hear that far away, but she can. She does not know for sure why she can, but she has some good guesses, none of them pleasant.
"Quickly! We must find it before it escapes!" Now she hears them coming towards her, panting like the dogs they truly were. She ran faster if it was possible. Then, she glances back. The mistake nearly cost her her life. She saw what the monsters really looked like.
Coarse, shaggy fur covered every inch of their bodies. Long snouts dripped saliva over razor-sharp teeth that looked able to bite her in half in a second. The hunched, misshapen forms that could give a grown man nightmares. These were the monsters that masqueraded as harmless young men. They were on the hunt. For her.
"Alpha? I've lost its scent. Should we continue on the hunt?" one of them half says, half snarls. Her heart beats frantically inside her chest, seemingly saying run hide quick, quick-
"No, we won't continue. Besides, how impossible is it for an experiment to survive alone in the world? It will kill itself in a week." The monsters laugh and slowly, slowly lope back to their den. She exhales with relief, thinking I am safe now! I just have to keep moving, so they will never know I am still alive. However, if I am to survive, I will need a name. She looks at the bracelet on her wrist, and sees that engraved on the flat, silver part, is the name, Alexa. Is that my name? Alexa? Alexa.....I can get used to being called Alexa.
And so, the newly named Alexa sets off, armed with nothing but her wits and the hidden abilities that have been placed deep inside her brain. Her last thought before setting off was How long can I hide from the monsters? Years later, her question would be answered. Not nearly long enough.
