A strange-looking girl walked into town, getting strange looks from the people in the street. She had on a faded green t-shirt, old jeans, and has no shoes on. Her long, auburn hair has one lone violet streak in her messy side ponytail, and nobody could quite discern the color of her eyes. She walked along the sidewalk, ignoring all the stares she was getting. Nobody was brave enough to approach her and ask her business there.
Alexa's POV (Third Person)
Ugh, why can't people ever learn to mind their own business? Alexa thinks to herself, inwardly fuming at all the weird looks she is receiving. No matter. I'll be out of here soon enough, on my way to wherever I want. At that, Alexa perked up. Ever since she first escaped, she'd been on the run from the monsters, which she later identified as being somewhat similar to werewolves. So far, they hadn't realized she was still alive, but Alexa kept running, fearing that they would find her out.
---Flashback Start---
Alexa had made her home in the forests, learning to survive and even thrive. She hunted only the speechless, dumb beasts like squirrels, rabbits, fish and the foolish birds. For the animals talked to her, seeking her out and whispering helpful advice in her ears. She ran with the deer, hunted with the foxes, who were as mischevious as they come. The truly intelligent birds sang to her of the joys of flight, and the snakes told her of tucked away sunning spots. At first, Alexa didn't understand why other people couldn't do these things, and she had thought that they surely must be deaf to not hear the lively conversations of the animals. Her animal friends had told her of the seemingly deaf humans and remarked that in all their years, she was the first one they had ever had a civilized conversation with.
She had not believed them, and so she went into a human town. Then, Alexa truly saw what her friends meant. The silly humans didn't even glance at the birds in a tree, dismissing their warning of incoming rain. Their not-foxes on ropes chattered happily about how much they enjoyed being outside, and the dumb humans didn't even acknowledge they were speaking! Alexa left then, having seen how blind the humans were. When the rain came (that the birds had warned of), they acted surprised, as if they didn't know it was coming. They grumbled about being wet then, but Alexa couldn't see the problem. The rain means that streams will rise, so the forest animals could have more to drink, and the fish would be more plentiful, so all the animals could eat better. However, she was still only a few weeks into her newfound freedom and had much to learn about the human race.
---Flashback End---
Back in the present, Alexa was musing to herself while walking across the human city, I wonder if there is a particular reason the humans can't hear the animals' speech. Are they just deaf? Or can I hear what they can't? She was so deep in her musings, Alexa didn't see the boy she ran into. End of Chapter One
