Hey. Simmons here. The first day of school was, as I heard some of the sophomores saying, 'pretty lit'. I'm pretty sure it's cool kid lingo, so I'm gonna go with it.
Anyways, the first Mathletes meeting is next week. Apparently, I can participate this year! So, that'll be fun. However, when I went to the office to check the list of extracurricular activities, a couple of other kids were standing there reading it. Since I'm kinda shy, I decided to wait for them to leave, but they just kept standing there talking. Hesitantly, I walked towards them.
"For the millionth time Donut, I'm not joining drama club!" the boy in the orange shirt exclaimed. He sounded exasperated, as if this argument had been going on for a while now. Donut seemed upset.
"But we need two more guys to sign up, or else we can't perform Something Rotten! I heard it from the teacher himself!" I felt kind of bad for Donut. I hadn't even met the guy, but his heart seemed to be set on performing this play.
"Why don't you ask that guy?" the first kid suggested, gesturing towards me. "Oh. Uh, hi. My friends call me Simmons." I stammered. Hey, it's not like I was expecting to be brought into this conversation.
"Hi, Simmons! My name is Franklin Delano Donut, but everyone I know just calls me Donut!" he was unexpectedly excited, for a guy who was so devastated just a minute ago. As he introduced himself, he extended his hand, smiling wide.
As I shook his hand, I added, "So, I couldn't help but overhear your conversation, and I'd love to help, but I was just coming in to check the times for Mathletes."
Donut bounced back over to the list, while his friend added, "Really? Mathletes? What are you, like, a nerd or something?" Donut looked offended, even though the insult wasn't aimed at him. "GRIF! THAT IS SO RUDE!"
"Hey, I'm just saying." Grif responded.
"I'm actually not a nerd," I clarified, "my mother always told me there's no shame in being smart."
Returning to his previous jumpy state, Donut interrupted, "Hey, Simmons! Mathletes meetings are on Wednesdays and Fridays, and drama club is Monday and Thursday, so you could do both if you wanted to!" A bit hesitant, I responded, "Sure, why not?" Donut's face lit up. Yet, I still wasn't prepared for the hug. I figured hey, at least Grif didn't sound like he was gonna join, and Donut seemed pretty nice, so what's the harm? Maybe I could actually make some friends at this school.
