"Come on Tommy, you can do it!" I say to my son backstage at a concert. Alex and I have been completely immersed in teaching him how to walk.
"Come on buddy!" Alex said holding out his arms. But Tommy wiggled a little bit before falling on his bum.
"That's okay sweetie, we'll try again soon," I said scooping Tommy up and kissing him. Alex ruffled the little hair that Tommy had before giving him and I a quick kiss. He ran onstage with the rest of the boys.
Currently, All Time Low was playing a show in New York City, and The Dream Sequence opened up for them. It wasn't too hard to balance Tommy and my music after I got used to it. And Tommy has so much fun at the concerts anyway. He's a little rock star. He was wearing protective ear muffs to block out much of the noise.
About halfway through the show, one of my bracelets fell off. I put Tommy down to get it and the next moment I turned back, he was gone. I was frantic for a second until I saw him walking over to Alex on stage.
I cupped my hand over my mouth and tears welled up in my eyes. Alex immediately noticed him and stopped playing at once.
"Holy shit, my son is walking everybody!" He yelled into the microphone. I laughed as proud tears rolled down my cheeks.
He scooped him up as the audience cheered and Tommy smiled and clapped too, he was so smart.
I ran onstage to retrieve him and Alex gave me a kiss, "We're the best parents ever," he said as the microphone picked up a bit of the sound. The audience "awwed" at us and I blushed.
I waved to the audience quickly and ran offstage. "Tommy I'm so proud of you!" I said hugging my little boy.
But what really stuck with me was that Alex said we were the best parents ever. Because I always remember when he doubted our parenting skills at Warped Tour that one year and I always worry I'm not doing well with Tommy.
But hearing from my husband that I am...that WE are doing good makes up for anything and everything.
"Oh! Somewhere in Neverland," Alex sang, sending me a wink. I smiled back at him and blew a kiss.
Not long after that incident we were sitting on our couch at home watching a movie. Tommy was planted in the middle of us snuggling up to my side.
We were watching Peter Pan, our favorite movie to watch all together when Tommy whimpered.
"What's wrong baby?" I asked picking him up on my lap.
He muttered something and I dropped my mouth open.
"Did he just say-"
"Da-Da!"
"Oh my gosh, Alex!" I said excitedly.
"Your first word! Up top little man!" Alex said high fiving Tommy.
"He's growing up so fast," I said getting emotional.
