Josh and Emily spent most of the night just sitting and talking. She told him about life back home and trying to juggle work, school and taking care of Ryan while he told her about his years away in the military. But when she asked about the injury he sustained overseas he quickly changed the subject after telling her he was not comfortable talking about what happened to him and many of his men he had lost on that particular day.
As the night grew late Emily was having a hard time hiding her urge to yawn. She didn’t want the night to end as the fear of never seeing Josh again came over her, but finally one slipped past her and before she could catch herself Josh saw it. He looked down at his watch.
“I didn’t realize it was almost 2 am. I’m sure you ladies are tired after a long day of traveling and then spending all night here,” I stated while standing from my chair and nudged Mike that was still talking to Megan. “Can we give you ladies a lift anywhere?”
“No we’re fine. We’re staying with my Uncle and he said he would take us back to the house when we were ready,” Megan replied.
Just then Joe came up from behind. “I’m sorry girls. I’m sure your ready to head out, but there is a problem with the cash registers and I can’t close them out until the computer system comes back up. But I’ll call a cab to take you to back.”
“Actually sir there is no need to do that. I had just offered to take the girls home if that is okay with you?” I offered.
Joe was silent for a moment; thinking through my offer when he suddenly reached is hand out to shake mine. “I trust you will drive them straight home and that they will arrive their safe.”
“You have my word sir.” We shook hands and then Joe pulled the two girls into a quick hug, kissing Megan on the cheek before releasing them to leave. Mike took Megan’s arm and wrapped it around his before leading her towards the door with Emily and me following behind.
We were both quiet as we walked outside, my hand placed against Emily’s mid back leading her towards my jeep. Mike and Megan climbed in the back and then I helped Emily up into the passenger seat. I then rushed around to jump into the driver’s side and started the engine.
It was a warm night but with the top off of the jeep, it allowed the wind to blow around and keep us cooled off. The music on the radio was on but low. I looked in the rearview mirror I saw Mike and Megan wrapped in each others arms and making out. I returned my attention to the road ahead of me shaking my head while laughing to myself.
“What’s so funny?”
I looked over to see Emily staring at me while trying to hold her long hair back off of her face. And in that very moment she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Then she smiled and I swear my heart stopped for a moment.
“Josh, what is so funny?” I could not speak around the lump caught in my throat, so I simply pointed my finger towards the back seat. She turned to see the couple and then turned back in her seat. “She is unbelievable.”
“I assume this is nothing new with her?” I asked and then regretted it as soon as Emily turned completely to her side with anger flashing in her eyes.
“Megan is not a slut if that is what you are implying.”
“I did not say that, but from your reaction it just seemed liked you were not surprised by what is going in my back seat.”
I could see her take a deep breathe and then the anger changed to sympathy. “I’m sorry, it is just that…”
“It is just what?”
“Nothing…can we just change the subject?” Emily asked as she turned back into her seat and stared straight ahead. “So what happened to your Camero? I thought you loved that car?”
