Chapter One
*Ember's POV*
____________
"Where's Hazel?" Dr. Mills asked me, looking at me stiffly.
"She's sick," I answered slowly.
His shield of confidence broke and worry filled his eyes. "Should we call in another nurse?"
"No, no! I can handle the job perfectly fine Dr. Mills. Honestly," I insisted.
"Are you sure?" he questioned me.
"Absolutely!" I said, thrilled. He walked away from me shaking his head and muttering to himself.
I looked around the chaotic hospital and took a deep breath. I wasn't completely sure if I was prepared for this. Sure, Hazel had taught me the best she could, but I was still uneasy about the entire situation.
Hazel was usually the main nurse of Hope's Hospital, but that day she had called out sick and told me to take her place. She had been teaching me how to become a better nurse for the past ten months and she said she was completely confident that I was ready to take on her job.
"Ember?" someone called my name from behind my shoulder. I glanced to see the cold eyes of Nurse Ellen. She was wearing her regular blue, worn out scrubs that she wore everyday to work, and her hair was in her signature slicked back pony-tail.
She had never liked me or my sister very much. Hazel had beat her out for the job she wanted. Which was main nurse.
"Yes?" I aked, politely.
"You're needed in room 3E." With that she turned her back and walked away, her pony-tail swinging from side to side, like it usually did.
"Hello to you too," I mumbled under my breath before heading down the hallway to room 3E.
There was a clipboard that I grabbed before knocking on the door. I pushed it open and walked into the cool room. There was a girl with an IV in her arm, her eyes were red, and I could tell by the alarm written on her face and that she was about to scream.
I rushed to her side and placed my hand against her warm arm and told her to breath deeply. "It's okay, you're okay."
"Who are you?" Her voice was dry and cracked at the end of her sentence.
"I'm Ember, today I'll be your nurse."
"Aren't you a little bit too young?" she asked. I almost wanted to laugh, she was almost as old as I was, maybe a year younger.
"I am eighteen," I told her. "Almost nineteen actually."
She didn't reply to me; just looked at me before slumping back into the squishy pillows.
"When can I get out of here?" she grumbled.
"Whenever you get better."
It wasn't until then that I suddenly realized what was wrong with her. There were second and third degree burns that ran down the arm that I hadn't touched.
"What happened?" I asked, allowing my curiosity to get the best of me.
She shook her head, tears coming to her eyes. I had hit a soft spot and she wasn't comfortable talking about it around me. I was going to change that. It was who I was. I was posotive that if I didn't become nurse I would be a psychiatrist.
