The Hawk's Keep
Chapter one
A Job For You
I sat down on the old worn out leather bar stool and sighed. No jobs this week. And last week only brought in a lousy body guard gig for some rich bastards son. If only I was a business man like Charles and Shiba. “What will it been tonight, James?” Robby, a ursine shifter, asked me, cleaning his glasses to shine.
“Ah, just gimme that bottle of rum of there.” I pointed to the dusty bottle on the shelf, “That's all I need tonight.”
“Alright you drinking bastard.” Robby joked, handing me the unopened rum. “Don't go bed hopping tonight my boy, heard some of the wanderer's are out and about.” well shit. That just made my night a whole lot better.
“Thanks Robby.” I muttered, turning around so I could eye the crowd and sip my rum. Not may people were here tonight but the ones that were...well lets just say they really didn't know how to hold their liquor.
“Hey man.” Jay, a wolf shifter ambled up to me and slapped my back so hard I almost dropped my drink, “You got a lady friend lookin' at ya.” looking to my right in the very back corner was a tiny little woman.
She had hair died blue, a sapphire blue. Her red eyes seemed to glow as she scanned the bar, looking for someone and she jumped every time someone was overly loud. “Hare shifter.” Jay murmured, eyes narrowed, “They don't venture into these parts much, something is wrong, James.”
Muttering a reply I stood and made my way over to her table, startling her big time when I cleared my throat. “Mind telling me why a pretty little shifter like you is out here all alone and in such a loud place?” I asked, keeping my voice low so the humans couldn't hear me.
“You know?” she asked, eyes flashing from ruby red to blue. There was a tremble in her voice and I sighed, leaning back in my seat as Jay ventured forward.
“You are a hare.” Jay stated sniffing the air lightly, “And you are afraid.”
“Wolf and a hawk...” she shivered and shrank back further, “I-i need some help for my father...”
“Need a body guard, a hit man, what?” I snapped, I hated dealing with Hares! They were always so skittish!
She whimpered and I sighed, why did this always happen to me? “My father is in trouble with The Wanderers.” she whispered. Instantly I was on alert. If it was her father they wanted they could be hunting her.
“Follow me.” I stated, grabbing her small wrist in my grasp and taking her to one of the private rooms. Robby nodded and closed off the back part of the bar. We were alone. “Your name, hare.”
“Elizabeth Krayton. My father is-”
“Frank Krayton...” Jay growled. He didn't quite like her father for his own reasons. “what has he done this time?”
“Cool it, Jay. Go stand guard.” he snarled and left the room, slamming the door too. “Look. I don't really know you or your father but why is he in trouble with The Wanderers?”
“Daddy stole something from them, I don't know what but-but...” tears started forming and I felt my anger start to form again, “All I know if they are after him and he told me to find a James Mayrose. Said he would help if I gave him this.” around her neck was a small bottle, it was filled with blue dust, but what was odd about the dust was what was inside it, a small fairy. She was sitting on the dust with a sad expression, wings turning brown.
“I am James.” I told her, “And that there is my mother.”
