Just Run Already

“L-lori, Kaylee I can’t do this anymore. Y-you have to go on without me,” Darcy huffed as she collapsed onto the pavement.

“I’m not leaving you!” I grabbed her hand and tried to pull her to her feet.

“You can do this Darcy! I believe in you!” Kaylee, seeing my struggle, grabbed Darcy’s other hand.

Darcy shook her head, “I-it’s too late for me. Save yourselves!”

“Stop being so melodramatic and just run already,” Dax rolled his eyes as he and Kal ran past us.

It was Friday a.k.a. distance day in gym class. I actually like distance day, running being one of the only things I’m decent at. I’d choose running outside over dodgeball any day. Weird I know, but true.

“Brave words for someone who was complaining that running was completely useless five seconds ago,” Kal smirked.

“And who got his butt kicked in dodgeball!” Darcy, still refusing to get up, yelled after them.

“Would you let that go already?” Dax spun around.

Darcy, finally letting us pull her up, smiled widely, “Nope!”

“Here we go,” Kaylee muttered.

After the dodgeball incident a few days ago, Dax and Darcy had been fighting even more than usual. They could barely be in the same room with each other without getting into some type of fight. Today they already have fought over if Starbuck’s coffee was too expensive, if it was too expensive then where you could get slightly less expensive coffee, if that slightly less expensive coffee would taste the same as the expensive Starbuck’s coffee, if the slightly less expensive coffee tasted worse than the expensive Starbuck’s coffee then was it worth it to get the expensive Starbucks coffee, and which Mutant Ninja Turtle was the best. It was getting pretty ridiculous.

Kal walked over to us and rolled his eyes, “Seriously, we only have one more lap to go. Can’t they wait until we finish running to start fighting?”

“Like that would happen,” Kaylee sighed.

“This looks like it’s going to be a long one,” I grimaced.

“When is it not?” Kal replied.

“Maybe we should-” Kaylee started.

“Run?” A voice from behind us interrupted.

Kaylee, Kal, and I spun around to see our gym teacher standing right behind us, holding a bucket of water.

“Ms.Salvia, Mr.Salvia, Ms.Reed is there a problem?”

“No!” We all exclaimed simultaneously.

“Good, then you’ll want to get some towels from the locker room for you hotheaded friends over there,” Mr.Castiel grinned before walking over to Darcy and Dax.

“Why would they need towels?” Kaylee asked puzzled.

Kal turned to answer her right as Mr.Castiel reached the place where Darcy and Dax were fighting. They, of course, were to busy fighting to notice him. So, they were caught completely by surprise when Mr.Castiel dumped the bucket of water over their heads. Darcy and Dax froze. Whatever happened next was not going to be good.

“We should probably go get those towels,” I suggested weakly.

None of us moved.

“Yeah, that might be a good idea,” Kal agreed.

Still, none of us moved.

“Or we could just stand here...” Kaylee added.

I nodded and Kal said, “Yeah that would work too.”

“Or you could just run already!” Mr. Castiel yelled over his shoulder.

We looked at each other and sighed, running it was. But hey, I like running, it’s better than dodgeball at least.
