Research on the subject you are writing.

I have seen so many writers that write science fiction which doesn't follow basic principles of science.

E.g. let's say there is a writer who is writing about a society which is segregated according to say, eye color, and the eye color determines the inherent talent of that person and their job and place in the social pyramid. So the story goes on and even ends on a happy note, but they wouldn't explain to the reader how the hell that particular law of their universe came about, anywhere in their story. The least they could do is mention that the gene for eye color was discovered to having a direct link to a person's aptitude. Come on man. It's sci-fi!! You are catering to a group of readers the mostly consists of nerds. There are going to be questions asked.!!!! (Disclaimer: this was just an example and is not intended to bear resemblance to any work of any writer, nor to insult them.)

Needless to say, a science fiction writer must know the basic laws of science in order to create a more complex science fiction theme around which the story revolves.

This will help the writer fill in plot holes, and keep things sensible.

A political drama writer must have an idea of the different forms of governance and social structure and how they work out at a basic level.

A crime thriller writer must have some insight on criminal psychology for his take on the main antagonist and his evil actions to make sense to people.

Hope you get an idea.! So go ahead. Grab that 101 textbook and brush up on your theory.

The only genre in which I believe you probably don't need to learn any form of science is fantasy. Because in fantasy you create your own universe with your own set of rules. So if your a fantasy writer, you could probably get away with knowledge of just basic social skills and dialogue writing, since you would need that to form realistic conversations, that don't seem like you're characters are retards, who don't know how to put two words together into sentences.
