Miranda's pov
I wake up early and open my window. The sunlight warms my face. I look down below. The grass and river meeting my eyes but never once being touched. I have never left this tower. My home. Mother says it's too dangerous. She doesn't want me to get hurt. I get started on the day then my mother comes out of her room. She hugs me. "Good morning mother." "Happy birthday, Miranda." She says smiling. She hugs me. "What would you like for your birthday?" I take a deep breath. I've asked every year. But I'm turning 18 now! "Mother I wanna see the floating lights! They're beautiful from the tower but I think I wanna see them up close!" Her eyes go wide. "Now, Miranda, you know my rules!" "But.... But mother you go out all the time!" "I don't want to! I have to!" "Please mother! I have to see the lights! I have to!" I beg, clasping my hands together. "No you don't and no you aren't now stop asking!" She yells. I back up, trying not to cry. I run to my room and throw myself on my bed sobbing my eyes out. "When will my life begin?" I whisper, shakily. I come out of my room about twenty minutes later and wipe my eyes. "I thought of what I want for my birthday." "What?" She asks still angry. I swallow nervously. "Blue and emerald paint." She sighs. "That's like a three day trip!" I put on my best pouty face. "Please!" I beg. I just want her gone long enough to sneak out and see the lights myself. "Fine." She hugs me then packs her stuff and leaves. I take a deep breath. I've never left the tower but I'm about to.
