Ji is a woman found in the ocean with pale, almost grey, skin, gills, and fins. She was sent to the freak show as the real mermaid. She wasn't allowed to talk outside of the show or eat around other people due to her teeth and her eyes turning black.
When she is not being exploited, she is speaking to her fellow "freaks" with sign language. She is forced to wear special gloves, scarves, pants, and long sleeved clothing due to her fins and webbed hands.
Later, she explains to the only person who took interest in her personality, Jimmy, about how she was one of many humanoid sea creatures. She was more like a shark.
