I watched the blood drip down my wrist and fall into the sink water changing the color to a pinkish red. I placed a brown standard band-aid over my cuts and slid my long dark greyish-teal shirt sleeves over my wrists. I rinsed off the blade, placing it back in the cabinet closing the door gently. With that I walked out of the bathroom slipped my knee-high lace-up boots on, grabbed my heavy homework-filled black backpack, and walked out of my bedroom shutting the door behind me."H-hey mom, I'm walking to school today since it-it's so nice outside s-so can you throw a-a granola b-bar into my l-lunch s-sack for br-breakfast?" I asked my mom while walking down the stairs heading in the direction of the kitchen.

"You're already fat Kayla, I'm not giving you any more food for today." My mom said harshly as I walked into the kitchen to grab my lunch sack.

"Ok." I said quietly grabbing my lunch sack. I walked out the door and started the trek to the school that was about eight blocks away from my house. As I was walking I heard footsteps coming quickly up behind me so I stepped aside into the grass to let them pass, but as they came up next to me I heard their footsteps slow and looked at their feet to find them walking my same pace next to me. Huh? I looked up to find that an extremely hot boy with dark pulled-over hair walking next to me. "Hi." I said looking at him a smile creeping up my face.

"Hey." He said looking at me with a bright white smile on his face.

As soon as he looked at me I thought that my heart had melted. He was just so hansome. I had never seen him before so I was really curious as to who this stranger was. "I'm sorry, b-but I don't recognize you. D-do you go to Rain High?" I asked, my voice stuttering because of my speech impediment and because I was nervous talking to such a good looking guy.

"Oh, you're okay. I'm new here. I just moved from a small town called Mirlyn. By the way, I'm Jeff, what's your name?" He asked keeping that bright white smile on his face.

"I-I'm K-kayla." I said cringing because of my speech fail.

"Nice to meet you Kayla. I hope everyone I meet is just as nice as you are. Say, can we be friends?" He asked, looking at me with his bright dark brown eyes.

"Umm, y-yeah, of c-course we c-can."A big smile grew across my face. Wow, one person is actually nice to me! I have a friend! "B-but, I hate to br-break it to you b-but not everyone here is q-quite as nice as you t-think I am."

"Oh, well that's too bad, I was hoping to make a whole bunch of new friends here." He said looking down at his light grey tennis shoes.

"D-do you have your sche-sche-schedule yet?" I asked trying to change the subject to keep the mood bright and cheery.

"No, not yet. Do you know where I can go to get it?" He said looking at the tiny school before his eyes.

"Y-yeah, c-come this way." I said, my cheeks turning a rosy red from being out in the cool Fall weather. I lead him to a tiny building just to the left flank of the school. "C-come in h-here; the sec-secretary will get you your sche-schedule." We walked into the small grey building and over to the desk slightly to the right of the door.

"Hi!" The cheerful secretary Mrs. Liza said. "What can I help you with?"

"Um, I'm new here and I need to get my schedule. My name is Jeff Griswald." Jeff said looking all around the building his pupils dilating while trying to get used to the darker lighting in the room.

"Let's see. Okay Jeff, here is your schedule and I will have Miss Kayla over here next to you be your first week partner since you two have mostly the same schedules." Mrs. Liza said smiling with her pearly white teeth.

"Thank you," He said happily.

We walked out of the building into the blinding light of the sun shining into our eyes. "W-wow, I get t-to be your first w-week p-p-partner." I said looking down at the concrete parking lot trying to keep the sun from burning my eyes. "C-can I see your sche-schedule?"

"Yeah, here." He said handing his schedule over to me.

"A-art, Geometry, P.E., B-b-business Management, Spanish 1, English 1, Phy. Science, and S-study Hall." I said reading through his schedule. "I have all of the same classes as you except I'm taking Italian instead of Spanish."

"Okay, that's cool. When does the school day start and end?" He asked looking at me a soft small smile spread on his face.

Brrrriiiiiinggggg. "Well, it s-starts now. And it ends at three-thirty. We-we b-better g-get going inside. And b-by the w-way, each grade has only around t-twenty k-kids each so I h-hope you can survive in su-such a s-small school." I said starting towards the front entrance doors.

"Don't mind me asking but why do you stutter while saying a lot of words? I'm not trying to sound rude but I'm confused." He asked tilting his head like a begging puppy.

"It-it's okay. Everyone a-always h-has to ask. I-I have a sp-speech imp-pediment and I c-can't f-fix it without s-seeing a-a speech t-teacher a-and m-my f-f-f-family doesn't h-have th-the money f-for that." I said stumbling over almost every word.

"Oh, well okay. And I don't know if it's too soon in meeting you to ask this but, can I get your phone number?" He asked just as we were reaching the main entrance way.

"O-oh." I said my heart jumping with surprise. "Y-yes, of c-course. I'll w-write it d-down f-f-for you as soon as w-we get to my l-locker." We got to my locker and I wrote down my number for him. I place my backpack into my locker and grabbed my Geometry and Business Management notebooks. I slammed my locker door because it could be so stupid at times and showed him where his locker was, which was just about five lockers down from mine. He placed his bag into his locker and grabbed two of the spare notebooks that he had brought (keep in mind that he didn't find out what his schedule was until his first day.) We both walked side-by-side to our first hour class; Art. We walked in just as the tardy bell was ringing. "M-mrs. Paint, t-this is J-jeff Griswald, h-he is n-new here from the t-town of Mirlyn."

"Nice to meet you Jeff." Mrs. Paint said with a smile. "Now Miss Kayla Wood, have a seat so we can get started with class." Mrs. Paint frowned at me turned to face the whole class as Jeff and I sat down. "Now class..."
