5 years later...
Everything I had come to know before my mothers death had changed.. To keep my sister and I alive we had to change our names, attitudes, and clothes.. My sister Teran became Beth and I? I was no longer the girl who was afraid to ask. I became the girl who demanded and received. And because of that..
I became Adalyn Clay.
As I walk outside to catch the five am district bus, ran and operated by the government, -of course- for the bus to take me to an undying hell, also known as school. As I recognize the familiar, dull, lifeless faces of my districts high schoolers; I immediately find my best friend, Lilith, and she waves me over to sit beside her.
When I sit down the silence from the bus overtakes me and it suddenly becomes awkward. Lilith breaks the silence and whispers,
"Are you ready for today?
"Nice to see you too." I retort.
"Shut up, I asked you a question." she remarked.
"What's today?" I commented back questionably.
"It's the day we decide." she retorts snobbishly.
"Decide what, exactly?" I scoff.
"if we will become one of them." she remarks devilishly.
It was like my whole world came falling down. Our elders aren't suppose to tell us when or what choosing day was about, so how did Lilith know? Was she one of them? Did she know one of them? Was she one of them? My heart felt like it was about to come ripping out of my chest. My palms were sweaty and I felt that I had been hit by a blow to the face. 'Maybe I shouldn't trust Lilith' I think to myself. I don't know, but I know she cannot be trusted anymore. Should I be worried that I told her I like the new kid?
