Jakes POV:

I lay on the steering wheel blaring my horn as I manage to hit the fourth red light in a row only minutes from my house. Annabelle was not alright, she was not safe not even at my house as long as I wasn't home to protect her. When I saw her on my doorstep, she was no longer my lively sister Annie whom I had witnessed marry Damon two years prior. After the wedding, he swept her away to a honeymoon we presumed and then to live a blissful life together. I was so ignorant, so naïve to believe for even a second Annabelle had any desire to be disconnected from me for two years. The Annabelle I saw was lifeless, she was dying slowly from the inside out and Damon was the cause. She was brutally battered and bruised, blood stains and black eyes with several clumps of hair yanked from her swelling scalp. Her thin clothing hung loosely off her malnourished body as her collarbones painfully jutted out from the top of her chest.

Annabelle had shown up with no belongings, only herself, which was more than enough for me to count my blessings that she was alive based on the shape she was in. She explained to me how the heated debates escalated even further and how Damon's paranoia and anger over the belief Annabelle was going to leave him.

"Damon had stumbled home drunk, yet again, after a long night of 'work' at the bar. I had been exhausted from all the stress and constant shouting to I decided to sleep on the couch, not willing to deal with it all that night. However, Damon believed that this was a showing something more, that somehow it meant I was planning to leave him. He came over to me and gently shook me awake; I smiled at him unprepared for what he was going to do. He started shouting nonsense and reaching for me, he grabbed my hair and yanked and pulled. His fist began to pound into my body and I slumped down to the floor, then he kicked me and stepped on me until he was done so he left me there." Annabelle choked out as she relived the events from the night when she finally decided to leave him, yet this didn't make her feel safe at all. I could see the pure fear in her eyes, the way she jumped whenever I reached out to hug her or how she silently stepped around me as to not announce her presence.
