I was about to knock on Josh's front door when I heard a thump like someone had jumped down from somewhere, from the back of his garden.
Anxiously, I knocked loudly. No answer. What's happened? Did he not hear me? Was that sound him? Was it an intruder? Stop being stupid. He probably didn't hear me. I knocked again. No answer. "Josh?" I shouted through the letter box. No answer. I have a spare key. He won't mind me letting myself in, right? I opened the door with the key and walked through it.
"Josh? Josh, are you rea...?" I stopped dead. Blood stained the white carpet red. Slowly becoming more and more red up the stairs.
"JOSH!!??" I screamed and dumped my bag where I was and ran up the staircase, slamming open every door. "JOSH?! Oh god please be alive. Please be okay. Shit. Where is he? Please be alive. Please be..."
Then I saw him.
In the bathroom.
Led on his back, across the blood-splattered tile floor.
He was close to motionless.
"Em...ma," he gasped.
"I'm here!" I fell to my knees beside him and saw the bloody kitchen knife plunged into his stomach. Red spread through his school uniform and had sprayed up the walls.
"Who?... Who did this? Oh my god. It's gonna be okay. I need to call someone. I need to call an ambulance." I said shakily as I began to stand up but he reached out for me.
"Please. No. Stay. I... Need you... To stay." He said between groans of pain. His dark brown hair was a mess and his blue eyes were filled with lack of motivation to stay open.
Tears streamed down my face. "I need to. I need to help." I ran downstairs to my bag as he spluttered "Emma..." after me. I sprinted up the stairs two at a time and reached him, already calling the ambulance.
But it was too late. His eyes were still open. But he lay motionless, emotionless and pale. "Hello, please state your emergency," the phone answered. I stared at his weak, red-covered body in complete shock. "Hello? Could you answer please? Hello? What's your emergency?" Tears ran down my cheeks but I said nothing. I didn't feel myself drop the phone but I heard it clatter against the tiles. Then my view fell sideways and I felt my head hit the floor as everything went black.
