It had been three years since Mabel died. No one was ever arrested. They had a suspect, but no evidence against him. Nellie knew that it killed her dad. Not being able to solve the murder of a girl he'd known her whole life. Who was like his own daughter. Nellie tried moving forward. But when you loose someone close to you moving on just seems nearly impossible.
Obviously a lot had happened in the past years. Nellie and the rest of the group graduated High School. Nellie went on to study Graphic design. They all went their seperate ways, yet somehow they never stopped talking and meeting. Sheriff Matthews and Ms. Lawson worked together to find out what happened to Mabel, even though it was mostly because Ms. Lawson wanted to find out who killed her daughter. Obviously.
Lyla and Eli split up. Their relationship simply cracked under the pressure. If the murder of one of their closest friends wasn't enough already, the long distance gave their relationship the final push to the end.
And now, there was just one more year left until they'd finish college and their real life started. They decided to use this last summer to meet up. This time for more than just ten minutes. Two weeks. Eight people. One lake house.
Nellie was packed up and ready to go. She was just saying goodbye to her dad when Eli pulled up in his van. It was big enough to fit everyone so that they wouldn't have to take two cars to get there.
He rolled down his window, next to him was sitting a brunette beauty Nellie had never seen before. "Hey Nellie! Sheriff!" Eli yelled waving. "Hi! I'll be there in a second." Nellie yelled back.
"Okay, sweety. Have fun and be safe out there." Sheriff warned. "Of course, dad. I grew up living with a Sherrif, did you forget that already?" Nellie asked snickering. She took her bag and rushed to get to the van. "Love you!" Sheriff shouted after her. "Love you too!" Nellie yelled back as she got in the middle row of the van.
"Alrighty, let's do this!" Eli yelled. The girl next to him snickered. "Hey, I'm Nellie. Nice to meet you." Nellie said, offering the girl her hand. She turned around and took it. "Daisy. Nice to meet you too." she said smiling.
"Eli. You didn't tell us you had another guest coming with us." Nellie said. She knew Eli had a new girlfriend and she'd feared he'd bring her along. And she knew that if he were to bring her along, Lyla would be whining about it every day. For two weeks. And she couldn't take that, especially not while being on vacation.
"Oh no. Am I gonna be a problem? I thought you had asked, babe." Daisy said. "Naomi has a giant lake house. And we're gonna be sharing a room anyway. So what's the problem?" Eli asked as they were stopping in front of Ryder's house. He honked twice, signaling the boy that they had arrived.
"You know what's gonna be the problem." Nellie said. "She has to get over it eventually. It was a clean split. We both wanted it that way." Eli said. He honked two more times, this time more agressively.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I just don't wanna deal with a jealous Lyla for the next two weeks." Nellie said to Daisy. Daisy shook her head. "I get it. I just hope we can still have a good time." Daisy said. "I'm sure we will. If you guys maybe try and avoid each other." Nellie said. It sounded a little bit like begging at this point. Daisy laughed under her breath. "You never know what's gonna happen. Maybe we'll get along, at least for those two weeks." she said.
"Come on!" Eli yelled as he slammed his palm on the honk one more time. Ryder finally stumbled out the door. He almost fell down the stairs in front of his house. He rushed to the door and squeezed himself next to Nellie in the middle row.
"Hey, hun. Great to see you again." Nellie said. She hugged Ryder and Eli started the car to drive to Lyla's house. "Hey, I'm Daisy." the girl waved back to Ryder. "Ryder." the boy said.
