It was the middle of May, 2013, when the 1st Thunder Scouts left home for a weekend long backpackers challenge. I had gone on a backpackers challenge before at the Sleeping Giant, but this one took place in Quetico park. Our backpacks weighed about 30-40 pounds each. The day was all set to result in sore backs.
After the guide finished her long talk about how to poop away from water and to dig a hole, we drove up to the start of the trail. Seeing the trail made me disappointed because unfortunately, there was no bushwhacking. It was a clean trail already mowed. At least that's what it looked like.
We took a group photo, then started our 12 kilometer hike. 12 kilometers. fun.
An obstacle stopped us about a quarter way thought he hike. It was a creek! That's just great. Just great. 40 pound backpacks on and we have to cross a creek. Just great. The thought going through my head - WILL RESULT IN INJURIES.
Miles thinking he was smart, decided he would make his way across the creek. He saw an old, rotten log and thought it would be a good sturdy bridge to get across safe and dry. So he thought.
Mile then attempts to cross this log all gung-ho. When soon, he's not all "gung-ho" anymore. He slips on the wet log and gos swimming. In his clothes. And 40 pound backpack. Everything wet, perfect for camping. I hope he learned something from that.
Later that night we arrived at our first campsite. Me (shay), Jenifer, and Jessica set up our tent. Then the next morning came...
