Chapter 2 - Pretty Annoying
"Why were you talking to David? I thought you didn't like him." Michaela demands an answer from me as soon as I sit down at the lunch table.
"What do you mean?" I ask, trying to look innocent as I open up my flower lunchbox. I take out an apple and avoid Michaela's gaze.
"Don't play dumb with us, Lyz. You're nickname suits you. Lyz lies!" Hannah laughs at my angry expression. I can't help but wince when she calls me dumb, the insult isn't far from what everyone else thinks is the truth. I look around at the cafeteria and watch as empty seats are filled, hoping one of my friends will save me from talking about our encounter.
"Why do you think I'm lying?" I ask them suspiciously, taking a small bite of my apple.
"Because I saw you with him walking into your classroom as I was coming back from the nurse." Michaela replies smugly. "Why did he open the door for you?"
"You went to the nurse?" I ask.
"Yeah, I got a bloody nose in gym because... You're trying to distract me! Answer my question!" I sigh and tell them the truth, which frankly isn't very exciting.
"I don't know. Honest!" I say when I see their expressions. "He picked up my books for me when I dropped them and then sat next to me in class... I have no clue why."
"Maybe because you're so freaking pretty! I mean, you have flawless, well, everything! Why do you get all the good looks and I get nothing?" Hannah complains to me, pouting.
"Stop saying that!" I tell them loudly, earning a glare from one of the lunch monitors.
"Why? You know you're pretty, but why don't you show it off to everyone? I mean, you could be friends with practically anyone you want and become extremley popular, yet you choose to stay with us, the normal crowd." I frown at her questions, not wanting to talk about it.
"Yeah, why don't you want to show everyone that you're pretty?" Michaela adds in.
I frown and shut my lips tightly. I could never tell them why. They would never understand. All the pressure I go through, trying to be normal? They will never know. Most people think being given good looks is a good thing. They don't know how wrong they are.
"I just don't want to show off." I say, hoping they are going to accept my answer. They do and begin talking about some bullying assembly we had last week. I comment on it every once in awhile, but can't shake the feeling someone's watching me.
Sure enough, I turn around and find none other than David staring at me. I blush under his curious gaze, but my heart begins speeding up when he stands.
"Oh my gosh! Look who's coming over here!" I hear Lauren exclaim excitedly.
"He's not coming this way." I begin, but as he gets closer to our table, I know he is.
"Hey Liza." He says, using that nickname again. He lifts up a hand limply in some sort of friendly gesture. I see his friends whispering about this little exchange and can't help sending them a glare. Making gossip out of this is jsut pathetic.
"Hi?" I say, my voice rising so that it seems as though I'm asking him a question. Which for all I know, I am. I'm asking him why he bothered coming over here, let alone taking to me, of all people.
"Hi David." Lauren says shyly. Her crush on him has been as strong as ever recently, and today is no exception. David waves to her to before turning back to me.
"So, about class, I'm sorry I..."
"No. It was my fault. I should have the detention." I say without thinking. Then I realize I just said I want to serve detention instead of him and immediately regret my words. You never know what he could say to make that happen. Today, my luck hasn't been very good.
