All right everyone, brace yourself for a surprise in the middle of the chapter! One of my favorite chapter to write! :)

Chapter 5 – Pretty Accidental

We all decided to walk to Chilly Cow because of the gorgeous weather. The sunlight was almost too warm, and half way I stopped.

“What wrong Liza? Are you feeling faint?” David asked hurriedly, stopping his conversation with Zach.

“No,” I said, zipping open my backpack, “I just need to get out my umbrella, that’s all.” I took out the small pink object before giving myself time to ponder over his concern and opened it, revealing a nice sunshade.

“Huh. Using a rain umbrella as a parasol. Interesting.” Missy smiled at me, sliding under my umbrella. “OMG, it is so cool under here! This is a totally awesome idea!” She flips her brown hair over her shoulder and stops fanning herself, her tan face losing it’s flush. “Thank goodness, because my hair was starting to frizz. I mean, I spent half and hour straightening it!”

“You’re right!” Kristen says as she goes to take out hers, and Michaela just rolls her eyes at this whole act as she too takes out her umbrella. She already knows my weird ways. Katherine just giggles gleefully as her blond hair accidentally gets caught in her flowered umbrella. She simply untangles it and pulls out a brush to fix it back up into a ponytail.

Jared and Zach take out their umbrellas, covering David and Brice. People passing by us stare at us, but a few simply stop after we pass them and take out their own umbrellas. It’s almost comical.

We get to the ice cream shop and close our umbrellas before entering the store. Air conditioning greets us, and we all sigh.

“All right, why don’t you guys take that table over there.” David commands, and Missy and Katherine head over to the large table in the back of the place. Michaela and I follow, setting down our heavy backpacks and small umbrellas on the seats.

“I can stay here and watch our stuff, OK? Whoever orders first can watch the stuff then so I can order! Does that sound good?” Missy asks us.

“Sure!” Michaela says, happily dragging me back toward the entrance with Katherine in tow. When we got to the counter, we see that the boys are just passing us to drop off their stuff. When they come back, however, Michaela manages to do some shuffling so that David is in front of me. She sends me a little wink, and I glare at her. Thanks a lot.

“I’ll have a monster mash with chocolate chips in a wafer cone with hot fudge on top.”

“What size?” The man asks.

“Oh right. Um, I’ll just have a small.” David takes his disgusting snack and pays before heading over to a table.

“Hi! Could I please have a small vanilla ice cream in a sugar cone with rainbow sprinkles on top?”

I wait while he gets my ice cream and hand him some money. “Thank you.”

Walking over to the booth, I realize I have to sit either next to David or across from him. Before I have time to freak out about which one would be acceptable, however, David pats the spot next to him. I sit down, being sure not to let us touch each other.

“Vanilla? Really?” David laughs.

“At least I didn’t get… that.” I retorted, wrinkling up my nose. I set down my ice cream in a bowl I got so I can wipe my hands on a napkin.

“Try some.” David shoves the cone toward me and I recoil.

“Ew! No, that’s gross!” I say, pushing his ice cream back toward his bowl.
