Chapter 4 - Pretty Liar
As soon as I walked into the school building, I half expected everyone to start whispering about David and me. Apparently, that only happens in movie's, because absolutely nothing had changed since yesterday, except maybe everyone's outfits.
But of course, something had to change, because David is currently talking to me. Yes, to me. And I am starting to get dangerously angry with all this talking, so I try to keep my happy face on as David talks to me.
"Ah, there he is now!" David exclaims over all the noise, dragging Jared over to my locker where I am attempting to take out my books for periods 1 through 4. I blink, not listening to our one-sided conversation.
"Jared..." David says expectantly. I face the two boys, my face forming a scowl.
"I'm sorry for making you embarrassed in English class." Jared mumbles, and I almost don't catch his words. When I do, I almost start laughing right then and there. How did David manage to make him do this?
"I accept. Now please, could I get my stuff?" I ask David, gesturing to my books and folders behind him. He bends down and picks them up.
"I can carry them for you." He says, trying to juggle both my books and his. I giggle, and he smiles at me.
"Ok, maybe you should carry them." He says and laughs, handing me back my things. I can't help but let a giggle escape from my mouth again at the fact that this classic act of kindness didn't work, then blush.
"I have to go to class." I say, trying to push my way through the many people in the hallway. Someone shoves me backwards into Jared, and I fall. Just before I hit the ground, I feel strong arms wrap around me.
"Are you OK?" David says awkwardly as I look up into his bright eyes. He releases his grip on me, and I nod a thank you before trying to loose myself in the crowd. I know that I'm being stupid, running away from him when he makes me feel uncomfortable. But whenever I'm around him, my stomach starts hurting like it does when I'm in a bad situation and I feel strangely helpless. And I hate that.
I push my way through the crowds to my homeroom, which, despite the fact that it’s only 15 feet from my locker, is hard to get to because of the mobs of people. I stick out my elbows to push people away from me as I finally reach my homeroom classroom. Setting my books down carefully at my seat, I sit down in the small blue chair. Pulling out my book, I only get a chance to read the first page before the speakers crackle.
“Good morning Brighton Middle School, it is now time for the morning announcements. But first, a moment of silence.” I wait the required twenty seconds along with the rest of the class, although I am the only one not talking.
“Now, please stand as David Vogue and Zach Abard lead us in the pledge of allegiance.” I stand along with the rest of the class as we recite the pledge, all of our voices lacking emotion. When we take our seats and the announcements finish, our teacher dismisses us.
When lunch rolls around, I sit down at my usual table to see all my friends glaring at me. “What are you doing?”
“Uh, eating.” I say, stating the obvious.
“You’re supposed to be eating with your boyfriend!” Hannah says.
“What? I have a boyfriend?” I exclaim, shocked.
“Uh, yeah. David, remember him?” Hannah says, rolling her eyes.
“He’s not my boyfriend!” I protest, catching Michaela’s eye.
What’s going on? She mouths. I shake my head, telling her I have no clue.
“I thought he was! Gina told me that David had kissed you in the hallway and asked in front of everyone if you’d be his girlfriend. Aren’t you guys official now?”
