Chapter 6 - Pretty Sure

“Hello?” I search through my closet for something to wear as I answer the phone.”

“Hi Eliza, it’s Missy! I was wondering if you need a ride to the acting workshop? My mom can take you there and back.”

“Um, sure, that’d be great! What time does it start again?” I finally choose a skintight teal tank top with ruffles and white capri’s.

“12:30, so I’ll pick you up at 12:15.”

“OK, great! I’ll see you then!"

“Bye Eliza!”

“Bye Missy!” I hang up the phone and throw it onto my bed before getting dressed. Then, I brush out my long blond hair and apply a little bit of sparkly lip gloss.

Checking my clock, I go downstairs. My eyes land on the advancing figure of my dad and I smile at him.

“Oh, Lyz, I was just about to say goodbye. I’m going with some friends from work to see a movie. I’ll be back a little bit after you come back. Have fun at your workshop!"

“OK dad, love you.” I brush past him into the kitchen and grab my purse. Placing my phone in it, I set it down on the table.

“Lyz, are you ready to go to that workshop?” My mom asks as she comes into the kitchen.

“Uh, yeah. Missy, the girl who is going to, offered to give me a ride, so you don’t need to take me.”

“OK. Make sure to have a snack.”

“I will!” I take out some goldfish and snack on it while finishing up my Math homework. When I finish, it is already 12:15, and I am just getting up when someone rings the doorbell.

“I’ll get it!” I yell to no one in particular as I open up the large door.

“Hi Eliza! Are you ready to go?” Missy asks me happily.

“Uh, sure. Let me just grab my purse.” I take it off a hook and shut the door behind me, yelling a farewell to my mom.

“I am so excited to be going. I mean, I really don’t tell many people I like acting, because it’s technically not cool. But don’t tell my mom that, she doesn’t exactly get that I have a boyfriend to impress and all. I have to stay cool if I want to keep Brice.” She glances up at the sky dreamily at the mention of her boyfriend, and I resist the urge to roll my eyes. It’s hard to believe that we’re only in 8th grade.

We get into the car and buckle our seat belts. “Hi. My name is Jane, nice to meet you Eliza.”

“Nice to meet you too.” I say to who I assume to be Missy’s mom. She looks exactly like Missy, except older.

“But, David is pretty hot too.” Missy continues our conversation. “I mean, at first I totally liked him, and I really wanted him to ask me out. But then I got to know Brice better, and although David is taller and fit and altogether more popular, Brice has a really good personality. However, David would be totally perfect for you. I mean, he is on the football team, so next year you could cheer him on, maybe as a cheerleader like me! Oh my gosh, you should totally do cheer leading with me! That would be so fun! I know it’s expensive to pay for trips and everything, but then you would see David a lot!”

“You used to like David?” I ask her, trying to drive her away from the topic of David as my potential boyfriend.

“Yeah.” She makes a face. “So, as of now, you are just average, although you are insanely pretty. By hanging out with me, you’re already becoming popular, although that’s not enough. For instance, I’m called Missy because it is technically cooler than Marissa. David giving you the nickname Liza helped you become more popular. But you also need to go out with David to become popular. Besides, I know you like him. Don’t try to deny it.”
