CHAPTER 5--MYSTERY PAPERSI looked at the small screen in my hands, disgusted by how cheerful and nonchalant the blonde was about the death of a person, as she went over the news. It was the same blonde everyday that started almost every citizen of H.E.C, the name of the safe land where the only remaining thousands of humans lived. Apparently it stood for , Human Evacuation Centre, just another long series of words to call this 'jail' of a place. In my opinion it fits the title, Hell for educated cocks, but I am currently thinking of a better and more suitable name.
I shivered in my grey oversized hoodie that hid half of my face, and the water from puddles was soaked in by my tattered boots. Reminder, buy new boots when you get your next paycheque. The PodCast in my hands blared with noise and lights, awakened by todays news. The news which revolved around a gruesome murder ,most likely as the police had depicted, in the 23rd district at the Canal's. My mind leered at the mention of the Canals, the bunches of small rivers through where clean water about to go into the last stage of purification. However, it was more than the rivers, at night after curfew it was the home of the Alley's. A group of hoodlums, teens that want nothin' out of life and people that were forced to join, but nobody really knew who they were whatever info there was about them were assumptions; but i did, i knew who the Alley's really are and all i can say is once your apart of them you won't recognize who you are any more.
The blonde continued on with the news with introducing a police officer, whom apparently would be telling the audience about the death/murder of a fellow resident. My feet stopped walking, the scent of wet cement gone undetected as all my attention had been stolen by the little device in my hands.
The police man was a gruff voiced man, his face a devoid of wrinkles that crinkled and moved as he spoke, " The man reported by a fellow citizen who had been out for a jog, explained that the corpse of a man in his early 50's was found floating in the canals. The corpse of the man was unrecognizable due to the fact that his face cannot be identified. Further on the victim was found naked with serious of slashes followed throughout his whole body. As far as the evidence goes, we have confirmed the victim to be attacked by wild dogs, possibly let loose by someone intentionally."
The camera man turned the view back to the blonde who was now flaunting over a group of police officers, that had happened to come along with the ambulances to investigate the crime scene. They sated they're opinions regarding the situation and uncanny death of the man, but the last statement from a auburn haired, steely-eyed officer that seemed to be a new recruit caught my eyes.
" This is the seventh case regarding a death of a fellow citizen with the same marks and wounds covering their whole body. All the victims have been found in or around district C23. However, this is first time the victim has been found floating in the waters with his inner organs coming out. We at the H.P.D request that if any person has information regarding the death of our fellow citizen, the H.P.D encourage you to come forth." To finish his speech the new recruit looked right at the camera, seeming as if he were looking right at me and starring at the core of my soul.
Something about the way he said that the murder had also happened elsewhere and at five different locations all located near or in this district brought a involuntary shiver down my spine. Even though district C23 was one of the most gang fighting districts it was known the least amounts of death reagarding murder or naturally.
I turned off the PodCast, disturbed by the gory news displayed right at the beginning of a brand new day, couldn't they like wait till the afternoon. They just had to ruin a persons day; but nothing could beat up my mood today. It was the only day of the week, im free from school, and work ( well only in the day part, at night time it's totally different) and especially from Ma who would up my ass about doing chores and stuff. But today i'm gonna chill and do what i do best, have fun in my own little garden. My bag carried my favourite books and the countless sheets for homework that needed to be done, also counting the freaking ten-page essay due the next day. Procrastination i hate you, why'd ya have to make life miserable and filled with stress.
The ten-page essay wasn't the only thing on my mind right now, so was the numerous numbers of papers in the beige folder that was sitting at the bottom of my bag, forgotten for the night till now.
At the mention of the papers my mind steered towards Steve and her wife. It had been quite a night for me and poor Mrs. Nelly who had all those years thought that her husband was dead, but was actually a half- dead zombie thing that was roaming the streets at night the whole time. However, in reality the truth could be far worse than our hypothesis. To be frank i still think that Steve was hidding something from what he wrote in his letter it didn't quite add up. From the looks of it, what Steve said to be a accident seemed to be more troublesome than some accident, and i'm going to find out what it was.
My feet in auto- mode carried me all the way through the various streets and pathways to the rusted old fence boarded with plywood. Though sadly the wood wasn't strong enough to withstand the years of harsh weather and the poor maintenance too. I went to the farthest end of the fence, and with my palm felt for the rusty bar that unnaturally peaked through the wood and the fence. I pulled on the bar, it creaked and shuddered before creating a opening into my safe haven.
I stepped and was overwhelmed with the scent of freshness and life. Oh what i would do to live here forever. I sighed with happiness but it didn't last long. The familiar cocking of a gun and cold metal at the base if my neck allerted me before the voice of the owner of the gun did.
I gulped, maybe i would be next victim to be found the nest morning but hanging off a tree.
