I remember my first birthday like the back of my holey hand.
I sit on the floor, opening cards and presents which go with them. I approach a card and open it, not knowing what it says, I pass it over to my Mum in hope that she knows.
"Mummy what does this say?" I ask.
"It's a birthday card from your Dad. It says:
To Georgia,
Have a great day; I'm not forgetting you at all. I hope that sometime in the future, we would be able to see each other again.
G" My mum speaks, small tears being released. "He remembered." She whispers within a smile, I smile with her. From the age of 3 onwards I started to learn the writing if my fathers'. I snoop trough my mother's drawers and find a piece of paper with the correct codes and write them down.
I start to write full sentences with the symbols. I turn the page, repeating each letter until I reach the bottom of the page. Doing each letter like this made me improve the writing of this a lot easier.
Another day that I remember as clear as crystal was my first ever day at pre-school, trying to hide my hands as best I could, succeeding the best that I could remember.
I wake up, I walk downstairs I eat breakfast with my Mum and get changed for a new day before being stopped by my mum.
"Georgia, dear! You have to wear this today!" She smiles at me, handing me a jumper. I slip it over my head. My mum noticed my hands.
"Oh God! I'm going to have to cover them up! Umm..." She stutters and scurries downstairs. I try and read the logo. All I can read is 'school'. I smile and jump down the stairs, excited at what I might learn at school."Honey, can I just put these on you please?" She asks, I nod, not knowing what they are. She starts to wrap cloth around my hands, hiding the holes. After she finishes, she tells me to get my shoes on. I do so quickly and she puts me in my car seat and drives to the 'school'.
The car comes to a halt and my mum takes me out of my car seat. We both walk into the hall where humans my age are playing around I look at them.
"Mummy, why don't they have holes in their hands like me?" I ask my mother, she shushes me.
"Georgia you have 'burns' OK?" I nod and run off. I see my mum talk to the leader / teacher. They nod and my mum leaves the building. I sit on a chair and see a pencil and a notepad. Starting to write, I notice that the writing soon turning into a maths equation. I answer it myself and ask the teacher to rip it out for me. They look at what I've written and walk off with it. I follow them and they show it to the other helpers. I stretch my arms out to ask for it back. They smile and give it back. I put it in my bag which my mum gave me with my name on to show that it was clearly mine.I walk back into the big hall; one of the other children comes up to me and point at my hand.
"What is that?" They ask out of curiosity, I shake my head as if to say I don't want to tell them, but decide to say that they are burns, even though I know they aren't. They keep asking me if they can see the burns, I tell them no because I don't know how to take off the bandages and put them back on again.I walk over to a corner which has a blanket thrown over it, creating a dark area, I crawl inside and feel the floor, I feel that it's fluffy, I lie down on the fluffy floor, looking up at the cloth that has been thrown over the corner of the two self-standing, temporary walls, small amounts of light peeping through where the cloth has been weakened slightly. I hear a faint sound of singing, the words being 'What's going to work? Teamwork!' All of sudden, all of the other children around me started to tidy up, I got out of where I was lay down and helped tidy up too.
I and the other children start to clean up everything that we've done today. I start to put away the fuzzy Velcro pictures. One of my bandages gets caught in it, releasing the grip on it, I feel some of it slipping down, and I try not to panic, so I calmly walk towards one of the helpers, who helps bandage it back up. I see a small glisten of water drip from her eye.
