Chapter three:

Nalani Asani

After showering and changing into something simple, Nalani made her way over to her bed and plopped down.

Just as she was about to get comfy, there was a knock at the door.

Sucking her teeth, she got up and dragged herself towards the door and swung it open.

"What?" She folded her arms as she finally looked up at who it was.

Chuckling, Kareem spoke. "The fuck happened to you?"

Heading back inside her room, she went back over to her bed as Kareem invited himself in, closing her door.

It was forbidden for other males to go inside females rooms at the facility and vice versa but Kareem didn't really much care.

He figured that nothing was going to happen between them anyways since the two only just met two days ago so he thought nothing of it.

"I'm fine. And you know you're not allowed in here. Wasn't the guard out there?"

"Nah'. I think he went on his lunch break or something. Plus I'm not staying long." He took a seat on her chair and slouched back in it.

"Okay so..why are you in here?" Nalani was confused as to what he had to say o her.

"I just came to talk."

"About?" She was beginning to become irritated with him beating around the bush.

Kareem could also tell that he was making her annoyed and all he did was chuckle.

"You're so cute when you're mad." He continued to laugh.

Ignoring his compliment, she stood up.

"If you don't tell me why you're here in the next five seconds in gonna-"

"You're gonna what?" He found pressing her buttons was amusing but Nalani on the other hand thought otherwise.

"Can you just tell me why you're here." She whined. "I was gonna take a really nice nap before you showed up.

"I just wanted to talk. Get to kno' you and shit." He decided to finally tell her.

Siting back down, Nalani mumbled an 'oh' that was only audible for her to hear.

"But if you wanna go sleep, I'll let you." He was about to get up until she stopped him and told him that it was fine.

"You sure?"

"Yeah. I don't mind." She rubbed over her arm.

"Alright," he relaxed back in the chair. "How bout' we just start off with basic questions."

Nalani nodded as they began to ask each other simple questions.

"Where you from?" He asked. "Cause I kno' you not from here." He said referring to Atlanta.

"No I'm not. I'm from Philly but I moved here last year."

"Hmm." Was all he said. "Well as you can tell, I'm not from here either."

"Where are you from then? Wait don't tell me– is it somewhere from tha' country?"

"Yeah."

"Texas?" She smiled, hoping that she was right.

Kareem started to laugh, as she tried guessing again but only made him laugh even more.

"Okay I give up, just tell me. And stop laughing at me." She quickly searched for her pillow and shot it at him.

Moving quick enough, it hit at the wall behind him. His laughter died down.

"You were so off. Do I sound that country to you?" He smiled.

Nalani began to laugh, covering her mouth with her hand

Nalani began to laugh, covering her mouth with her hand. "I don't know. Kind of."

"I'm from Virginia."

"Why are you in Atlanta then?"

"I said I was from there, not lived there." Kareem replied.

"So you live here?"

"You're really curious aren't you. But yeah, I do."

They continued for talking for what felt like hours but was only an hour before Kareem thought that it was time for him to head back into his room.

"Wait so you have your own business here in Atlanta?" She asked him as she opened the door for him.

"Yeah. I'm only here 'cause I got caught with a lil' sum' and had to do some time and shit."

"At least you have something to go back to when you get out." She mumbled.

Glancing at her, his his lip twisted. "You don't have a job?"

"No. I was in here since I was about let's see– I'm twenty one now and I was in here since I was nineteen. And I mean I did have small job before but I'm a hundred percent sure I lost that by now." She laughed as he joined in.

"Y'kno, I like talking to you. Even though we had an unpleasant start the other day, you're not that bad." He stepped outside of her room leaning against the doorframe.

Smiling, Nalani lowered her head. "You should go before you get caught or sum'."

"Yeah. I'll see you later." He said backing away as she watched him walk off until he was out of sight.
