"Mario should be here any minute," I told my mom as I placed the chopping board in the sink. I grabbed the plates and laid them on the dinner table.

just then, the doorbell rang. "see, he's here!" I squealed, running down the hallway yelling "I'll get it!"

I opened the front door to be faced by Mario with chocolates and flowers in his hand. he wasn't dressed up, but it was more formal than what he would normally wear. I guess he was just trying to impress my parents.

I pulled him inside. "I am so sorry in advance if my dad and brother are horrible tonight."

he chuckled and pecked me on the lips. "I don't care how horrible your dad and brother are tonight, because you've forgiven me and that's all that matters."

I intertwined our hands and lead him into the dining room, where the table was laid.

I fake coughed, making my dad and brother look up from the kitchen bar, and my mom look up from the counter. my brother grinned evilly but my dad simply stared at Mario as if he was trying to figure out a puzzle.

my mom was the first to break the silence when she hugged Mario. "hi darling! how have you been? it feels like I haven't seen you in so long," she gushed.

"I'm good, Mrs Ernisse. what about you?" Mario conversed with my mom, visibly relaxing.

"I'm good too, thank you," my mom smiled.

my dad then reached out and shook Mario's hand tightly, which made him wince. "I've heard a lot about you, son."

Mario scratched the back of his neck. "all good things, I hope."

my dad ignored his previous comment. "let's sit down for dinner then, before the food gets cold."

I pinched Dallas' arm as I walked past him to the table. "you better not have said anything bad about Mario to dad."

he shrieked, rubbing the spot on his arm that I pinched. "dad, Beth is pinching me!"

"Beth," my dad scolded, shaking his head.

I rolled my eyes and sat down in the seat beside Mario.

"what was your name again? Luigi?"

I rolled my eyes once again. "his name is Mario."

"Luigi, Mario, Browser, Princess Peach.. what's the difference?"

I held my hand over my mouth in an attempt to contain my laughter. I failed and burst out laughing. both my dad and Mario glared at me and I immediately stopped.

my dad turned back to Mario. "I hope you have good grades at school. education is key."

"yes sir, my grades are good. I work hard at school."

"good. so.. what career options are you considering for the future? do you have plans for university?.." my dad trailed off.

"I definitely want to go to university but I haven't really thought about what course I'd like to choose yet." he paused as though he was wondering if he should go on. "currently, I run a blog and I have quite a bit of support on it."

"yeah dad, he's famous. he has lunch with justin bieber every thursday actually," Dallas piped in mockingly.

"very funny," I said sarcastically, glaring at him.

"can you pass me the salt, daddy?" I asked, in an attempt to change the conversation. I may or may not have forgotten to add salt when helping make the food. oh well.

I began to choke on my food when Mario and dad both reached for the salt at the same time.

well this is awkward.

Dallas burst out laughing. "you call- you- you call this guy 'daddy'?"

I kicked Mario's foot from under the table. "I don't even call you daddy! you did that on purpose didn't you?"

he grinned sheepishly. "you don't, but you definitely should."

luckily, my dad didn't understand what was going on and went on, questioning Mario. "so what football team do you support?"

"the giants," I whispered to Mario.

"thanks," he whispered back. "the giants, sir, of course."

my dad grinned, probably for the first time this evening. "me too. you make good decisions."

[lmao I don't even know any american teams, I legit heard of the giants ages ago in a movie so yeah]

Mario grinned. "I'm glad you think that. I should get going though."

"you should stay a bit longer.." my mom trailed off.

"thanks for the offer but it's getting dark," he sighed, pointing to the window. "I promised my mom I wouldn't be too late."

"if you say so," she shrugged. "bring your parents too next time."

my dad led Mario to the front door, and I peeked my head out the kitchen door to listen to what they were saying.

you know, I need to make sure my dad doesn't kill Mario or anything.

to my surprise, he pulled Mario into a hug. "I like you son. you make my daughter happy. I saw how much she smiled and laughed in your presence."

how cute, my dad and boyfriend are finally getting along.

"I'd like to remind you though, in case you hurt her, that I own a baseball bat," he said sternly.

dammit. I spoke too soon.

Mario's eyes widened at his comment, and my dad chuckled. "I'm only kidding. come again sometime, Mario."
