Erin continued to jog, her chest becoming heavy. She was beginning to lose energy; but she knew she couldn't waste food.
She was slipping into a daydream when she saw the road.
Hope sparked in her heart and happiness spiraled through her chest. Her eyes slowly widened and she paused, looking out at the street in front of her. The road glistened and the valleys behind it rolled on and on for miles.
Erin took two final steps, and as soon as she stepped into the clearing, a black misty figure swooped down and wrapped its hands around Erin's throat. Attempting to squirm free of it's grasp and gasping for air, Erin struggled and struggled.
Her face turned a vibrant red purple and she could feel her lungs close up. There was a sudden fire in her that spread from her chest to her brain, and then all she felt was a numbing cold.
And then, she opened her mouth and bit down as hard as she could.
She felt her lungs open and the blood finally start running through her body, gasping for air and collapsing onto the ground.
The figure screamed and howled, as then it dug it's fingernail into her neck and dragged it across.
Erin shrieked eerily. A gash had been created, blood dripping down her neck.
"What are you?" Erin yelped, sobbing into her shirt sleeve.
It did not respond, but it made a loud screeching noise and soared back into the woods.
Silence.
No birds singing, no moose grunting.
Nothing.
Tranquility.
To go back into the woods, or to go back to civilization?
Yes, Erin was curious..
But if that spirit really hated Erin that much; it would never leave her alone.
-
Erin could feel it, that shadowy figure. It was there and she could feel it. But she kept going and didn't bother to look behind her.
After walking that road for a while and thinking a ton, Erin had realized that before this she had been truly and utterly spoiled and ungrateful. She hoped God would forgive her for being that disgusting kid she had always feared.
After walking a while, she finally came across a small hut. It had light purple shudders and a dark oak door. Sitting on the brick steps was an interesting looking girl. She had a heart full of melancholy and eyes full of stars. She was a most beautiful girl; light amber eyes with golden flecks and shiny pink lips. Her eyebrows curved perfectly; and her eyelashes were long and thick.
Erin warily walked down the path towards the girl.
"Uh, hi... Do you know the way to Augusta?"
"Ah. You've traveled far from home, haven't you? Augusta is miles and miles from here. It would take days or maybe even a week by walk. You're in Canada."
Erin's heart sunk. She had went from Maine to Canada in a matter of five days. The worst part is; it was October 29th. She was bound to miss Halloween.
Erin spun on her heal to rush away, but then quickly turned back around as she had a sudden thought.
"Hey- what's your name?"
The girl hesitated, and Erin could feel the gears in her head turning quickly.
"My name's Spencer."
Spencer.
Erin tried to contain it, but she couldn't. Her jaw dropped and she could feel chills traveling down her back. Erin had known Spencer from the first year of high school. Spencer was very shy and quiet, but oh, was she mysterious. She would always be found sitting in weird places that nobody was near. However, Erin had noticed one thing. Everywhere Spencer went, there was a certain design. Two transparent unidentifiable creatures intertwined, and in the middle was a small orb with a very ornate design. It looked like some kind of maze embedded into the surface.
Erin recognized that symbol from somewhere, but she couldn't remember from what.
Spencer's POV
The girl can't possibly know what I'm up to, right? The chosen girl. I've been hunting her all this time, but I was playing the game wrong. Except I realize there is no game. Games have prizes like a stuffed animal, maybe a popsicle. There are many options. Meanwhile, in this rodeo, there's two options; life or death. Now I've finally found a way to get closer to her- and kill her.
