Chase
Pulling up in front of the familiar large Georgian style mansion, set in it own huge grounds, I felt a twinge of sadness as well as a tightening in my stomach, killing the engine we sat in silence for a few minutes, neither of us moving."Wow!" It was Taz who eventually bought me back from my thoughts.
"Your parents live here, you grew up in that house"
I could see she was nervous as she twisted her hands together in her lap.
"Yes" I whispered. "This was my home"
At that moment the front door opened as as we both looked up the flight of steps my mother appears in the door, still a looker at the age of forty eight, slim body, neat short hair with a few grey ones making an appearance. Dressed in a knee length dress and a thin cardigan against the chill.
"Is that your mum" whispered Taz breaking me from my reminiscing.
"Yes" I sighed, knowing I had a lot of making up to do.
"She's pretty"
I turned and looked at my mother after these words from Taz, I had never looked at my Mother like that, to me she had been my mother, a source of money when I needed it, but now I didn't need it and hell yes she was pretty.
"Come on, let's introduce you" I said opening my door and stepping out onto the gravel, before I lost my nerve and hightailed us out of there.
I moved round and instinctively opened Taz's door and held my hand out to help her from the car, which she accepted, but dropped as soon as she was out.
The saying you reap what you sow was more prevalent now than its ever being in my life, I had three important people to win over in my life and it started in ernest today.
Gesturing for Taz to go first I walked just behind her up the steps, pulling level as we approached my mother.
"Well" came the greeting "And what do we owe the pleasure, for this visit"
"Hi mum, I haven't been for a while, so I though I would surprise you, this is Taz, my friend" pointing to my side.
One thing about my parents they may be pissed off at their son, but they had manners.
"Please to meet you Mrs Morris" Taz mumbled offering her hand.
"Taz" my mother repeated raising an eyebrow.
"It's Taylor actually, but Declan shortened it to Taz"
My mother shot me a quick look that held a flash of surprise in her eyes, before turning back to Taz and ignoring her hand pulled her into a hug, which I could see shocked Taz, I mean it shocked me, my mother had never done that to any other girl I had bought home.
And her next statement shocked me even more.
"So glad to meet you Taylor, but please call me Mollie, Mrs Morris is to formal"
"Okay, Mollie, thank you"
"Come on let's get you inside, I'm sure you must be thirsty after that long journey" as she ushered Taz inside leaving me to follow behind, hell I have got a lot of apologising to do.
My mother guided Taz into the dining room and straight up to my father who was standing by the fireplace resting his arms on the mantle piece, he stood up straight as Taz was thrust at him.
"Duncan" my mother informed him "This is Taylor, your son's girlfriend"
My father looked at my mother for a second and you could tell something past between them, before he shot me a puzzled look, before concentrating on Taylor.
"Please to meet you Taylor, call me Duncan and why's a nice girl like you want to be my sons girlfriend's?"
Thanks dad don't make it easy on me will you.
"Duncan" admonished my mother, with a look that could kill.
"Oh, Mr.. err.. Duncan, I'm not his girlfriend, We're just friends"
"Of course you are my dear" my mother soothed, clearly not believing it for a moment. "Now let's get you seated and get you that drink I promised and a bite to eat, I bet your hungry"
"Do you need any help?" Taz offered.
"No no! Your the guest, what would you like, I have some apple pie left, you could have some of that with ice cream if you like" their voices getting quieter as they moved into the kitchen.
An uncomfortable silence fell on the dining room and when I tried to make polite conversation, it was greeted with one word answers, so I gave up trying and we stood looking around and not making eye contact.
Luckily my mother called us into the kitchen for tea and the awkwardness was over for the moment, as I followed my father into the kitchen I knew I couldn't put it off much longer I had to swallow my pride and be a man.
Entering the kitchen I knew so well, I found my mother all alone and before I could stop myself I blurted out in a panicky voice.
"Where's Taz?"
"She's with Toby" smiled my mum.
I sighed with relief, I honestly thought she had left, sheesh what an idiot I was, where would she have gone she didn't have any transport and it was to far to walk.
My mum smiled at me, something she hadn't done in a long time and nodded with a knowing look on her face.
I glanced out the window and sure enough there was Taz on the back lawn, crouching down ruffling Toby's hair on his neck and Toby being Toby loved all the attention.
Toby was the families four year old pet black Labrador and a big softy and at that moment in time I would have swopped places with him in a heartbeat.
There was no better time than now.
If I was going to do it, I had to do it now, taking a deep breath.
"Mum, Dad, I have something I need to say" they both turned away from the window and gave me their full attention.
"I would like to apologise for being a complete and total arse to you, I now know how wrong I was and how right you were and I would like to make amends so we can start again"
My parents didn't budge an inch, I wasn't sure they were still breathing and I was positive I could have knocked them over with a feather.
If it hadn't been such a serious talk I would have burst out laughing at the looks on their faces.
They turned to each other and then back to me.
"Um, yes I forgive you" stuttered my mother clearly still in shock.
So I moved forward and gave her a hug before doing the same with my father and to each I apologised again.
Shaking themselves out of their stupor, my mother asked.
"Does this change have anything to do with a certain young lady?" her eyes turning to look out the window.
"Do you like Taylor?"
There was no point in lying to her, she would see straight through it.
"I love her mum"
"Are you sure, it's not just another of your passing fancies is it? "
"No mum this is it for me I really do love her"
"And how does she feel about you"
"It's complicated " I said quickly.
"How so"
I sighed.
"I wronged her mum in the worst possible way and I hate myself for it, but I'm willing to do anything for her"
"Anything" she asked with a look of surprise on her face.
I looked first at my dad as he stood just watching our exchange, then fixing my eyes on my mother's so she would know I meant ever word I was about to say.
"Mum I would willing die for her"
