My dearest, John, I know you don't like Eliza but i figured you should be one of the first to know considering you are one of the closest people to me but Eliza gave birth to a beautiful baby boy a couple days ago. They are both fine now, both healthy. We've named him Philip. Also both Eliza and I would like you to be his God Father. Please hurry with an answer because otherwise Hercules will fight you for the title.

With the best of wishes, A. Ham

Alex takes a moment to read over his work before he sends it, not noticing Eliza had entered the room.

"Alexander there's a letter for you from South Carolina,"

"It's from John Laurens I'll read it later" Alexander says excited to read the newest letter from he turtle loving friend in South Carolina.

"No its not" Eliza says gravely.

"Will you read it?" Alexander says worried.

"On Tuesday the 27th, my son was killed in a gunfight against British troops retreating from South Carolina. The war was already over. As you know, John dreamed of emancipating and recruiting 3000 men for the first all-black military regiment. His dream of freedom for these men dies with him."

Alexander was speechless. For the first time in his life Alexander Hamilton was speechless. John Laurens, his best friend, the man he trusted with every aspect of his life was gone. He didn't want to believe it. Sweet, brave, John had died.

"Alexander are you alright?" Eliza asked coming closer to her husband.

"I have so much work to do..."

***Many years later***

"Hey dad?" 11 year old  Philip says walking timidly into his father's study hands behind his back.

"Yes Philip?" Alexander responded not looking up from his writing.

"Who's John Laurens?" Alexander stopped writing and sat up in order to face his son.

"He was a man who was very dear to me."

"Is that why you call him 'My dearest, John'?" Philip asks innocently, pulling a clump of papers from behind his back.

"Where did you find those?!"

"In a box under your bed-"

"Go put them back Philip they aren't yours."

 "But dad-"

"PHILIP I SAID PUT THEM BACK, GO PUT THEM BACK! ACTUALLY YOU KNOW WHAT GIVE THEM HERE" Alexander yelled with tears in his eyes. A crying Philip held the papers out in his hand. Alex snatched them from the crying boy and held the letters close to his chest.

"Im sorry dad" Philip cried then ran out of the study. 'Oh John,' Alexander thought 'what did I do?' Alex took the papers and put them in one of the locked drawers in his desk. He then went to his son's room. Alex quietly knocked on the door

"Philip? Can I come in?" He hears a few sniffles and a quiet yes. Alex walks in and sees a lump under the blankets on the bed. He walks over to the lump, which he assumes is his child since he can hear quiet sobs coming from it, and rubs one of the sides.

"Im sorry for yelling at you. John was very special to me and I miss him very much." the sobs slowly stopped.

"What happened to John?" Philip asks emerging from his blankets.

"He died. He died making our country what it is. He was so brave and so kind. He would have loved you."

"What else did he do, besides die for us?" Philip asked.

"Well he once got into a duel with Charles Lee for me because the President Washington said I couldn't do it so John did it for me. Philip whatever you do don't get into a duel. You could die. And another time..." Alexander spent the whole night telling stories of John's bravery to his son all night and eventually fell asleep with Philip. Then the next morning when Eliza went to Philip's room to wake him when she saw her husband and son on top of one another, asleep. She decided to let them stay that way for a while. They needed their sleep. And from that day forth Philip decided he wanted to be brave just like his dad's friend John Laurens.

I may not live to see your glory

(I may not live to see our glory)

But I will gladly join the fight

(but I will gladly join the fight)

And when our children tell our story,

they'll tell the story of tonight.
