First, you sent a priority message to your mother, telling her to reply as soon as her schedule allowed it. This investigation mattered very much to Starfleet, and you were determined to do your best. Your aunt could be anywhere now, and searches should commence as soon as possible.

You were re-reading what was probably the least helpful report ever published when your door chimed. It was the first visitor to your quarters that you could recall.

"Enter." you called.

The door slid open, and Data walked in, holding a small tablet.

"Hello, Data."

"Hello, Ensign (Y/N). I have gathered all available records and logs about your aunt so that you may study them."

"Okay, get comfortable. I'm going to be reading for a long time."

He handed you the tablet, his golden eyes flickering across the mostly empty room. You had tried your best to make your quarters as cozy as possible, but alas, most of your things were in your home on Earth.

You were reading Selynis's academy registration form when Data's voice interrupted it.

"You read the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?"

He was holding your copy of The Complete Sherlock Holmes, one of the only books on your bookshelf. It was worn from reading and re-reading.

"Yes, I actally do." Even though Data was very different from you, any common interests that you shared would help get along with him.

"I find Holmes's method of investigation most intriguing. Perhaps we can apply some of his strategies to our current investigations."

"Hmm. Interesting. Are there any trends that you found in this collective reasearch that may provide some explanation for my aunt's behavior?"

Data slightly leaned forward. "A significant portion of Selynis's conduct grades were low. She had the bare minimum required conduct grades for her Starfleet enterance exam."

"Really? If her grades were that low, how did she ever get promoted to Lieutenant Commander?" The pieces of the puzzle were complicated. Surely there was more to this incident than what met the eye.

"It seems her behavior improved significantly after she was assigned to the Hera. Logs from her superiors seem to imply that Selynis didn't perform to expected standards at first."

Data stood up. "I must go back to my quarters. My cat, Spot, needs to eat her dinner now."

You had one more question to ask before he left. "Data, why did you come here? Couldn't you just have sent me all that information?"

His jonquil-colored eyes narrowed in a perplexed expression. "I do not know." He said simply. He briskly walked away.

You chuckled to yourself before saying, "I'm onto you, Data."
