The school day went as usual for Aspen, except for one thing. There was a new girl. Aspen couldn't stop thinking about her, she was so pretty. Prettier than Savannah, even. Although Aspen would never say that to her face. She was new to the school, Aspen could tell. She had that deer in headlights look all throughout class.

She had decided to sit next to Aspen, which Aspen didn't mind. Savannah, on the other hand, did. She gave Aspen pointed looks, daring her to even look at the girl sitting next to her. Aspen wanted to talk to her, comfort her even. God knows how hard it is to adjust to a new school, especially when everyone is giving you the cold shoulder. 'Poor girl' Aspen thought to herself. She promised herself she would speak to her, out of Savannah's view.

The day went by quick. Aspen barely noticed Savannah's extra cold shoulder to her, not that she minded. Savannah could be a real brat when she wanted to be. Aspen had not got a chance to speak to the cute girl at all today, which was a slight disappointment. All would be okay, though, once Savannah was done socializing she would drop her off at the humane society, and she could finally be with her dogs. Savannah walked up to Aspen after about 20 minutes of chatting, Aspen was leaning up against her car.

"Get off my car" Savannah spit at her, that was rather cold, even for savannah's standards.

"Is something wrong?" Aspen didn't do anything wrong today, she was careful to not talk to the girl, or spend longer than 2 seconds staring.

"Yes, you." Savannah replied back bitterly. "you've been looking at that new bitch all day, you barely even noticed me."

Aspen sighed, "I'm sorry baby, I didn't mean to offend you."

She reached out to hug Savannah and Savannah denied her.

"no, NO, you don't fucking touch me, don't come near me, don't talk to me. We are done." With that, Savannah stormed off, slamming the car door on her face.

Aspen didn't go to the humane society, instead she collapsed in front of everyone, her world was crashing around her. Savannah was gone, the dogs were gone, she would never see buddy and lucy snoozing together anymore, she wouldn't see rover frolicking in the distance, just happy to be alive. She was trapped in the hell her family had created for her, and there was no possible salvation at this point. She let out a scream of frustration "FUCK" the screams soon turned to tears, and no one was there to hold her, she was certain no one would.

After everyone seeing, and hearing, the huge breakup between Aspen and Savannah, and Aspens mental breakdown, no one talked to her. Savannah had blacklisted Aspen. Only one person, who didn't care for Savannah or her opinions, wanted to chat. The new girl, Aspen had learned that her name was Lex. Aspen still gave her the cold shoulder, it had been weeks since the Savannah break up, and Aspen had set up a wall. A wall no would could break down, solely to protect her heart. Since the breakup, she hadn't been to the humane society. She couldn't, she never had money and she couldn't get a job. She had her joy stolen from her.

Her dad certainly enjoyed having her home all the time, the ability to abuse her whenever he felt like there was some anger he needed to release was almost overwhelming for him. Since she was home all the time, the beatings became more frequent and more intense, the reasons varied. Sometimes there wasn't even a reason. Sometimes it was pointless beatings just to relieve stress. She started to run low on concealer. The weather was starting to heat up, which meant soon, long sleeves wouldn't be able to save her.

The first day of the new quarter, she and Lex had become what some would call friends. Aspen had run out of concealer, and it was too hot to wear a long sleeve, the day had come. She would have to wear a regular shirt. Her dad had given her a fairly good beating the night before, the bruises had become purple and black with some yellowish tint to them. These had been the worst bruises she'd seen in a long while. After showering and finding a shirt, she headed downstairs.

Normally, her parents were asleep when she headed downstairs. Today, her dad had gotten a headstart of drinking. He reeked of shitty beer.

"Hey dad, I'm off to school" before Aspen could go anywhere, her father had his hands in her hair and he was swinging her around, which wasn't hard since Aspen weighed 89 pounds soaking wet.

"Dad what are you doing?!?" Aspen shrieked.
Aspen had never really questioned her father, even when he was beating her, she usually stayed submissive, her newly found power angered her father.

"Don't you ever fucking talk back to me!!" He yelled back at her.

Before she knew it he had flung her out the front window. Glass was everywhere. She was disoriented, he had never thrown her out a window before. He was enraged, he stormed towards her now cowering body,

"Don't you ever talk back to me again, you understand!?" He yelled at her. She nodded meekly.

"Good."

He left her there, surrounded by glass. She had at least two new bruises, seven cuts, three of which would probably need stitches, and a possible concussion. She knew she couldn't go to the hospital, too many questions would be asked, she pulled herself off the ground and limped into her house. She patched herself up and limped to school. Max saw her and immediately ran to her side, paying no mind to the daggers Savannah was staring into her.

"Oh my god Aspen what the fuck!!!" Max screamed

Aspen gave a weak smile before she noticed Savannah. "Hey Max-" she stopped, Savannah's gaze of death and destruction had met up with Aspen. She hung her head and walked as fast as her body would allow into the building, trying her best to ignore the worried Max.

Once she got inside, she guiltily looked up to Max, who was taller than her, and said "i'm sorry, Savannah would have come after you if I had said anything to you." Aspen had started to care for Max, mostly as a friend. But a small part of her wanted more.

Aspen expected Max to be upset at her, instead Max's face softened.

"Oh sweetheart" her voice was a little deeper than the norm for most females. Aspen didn't mind, she liked the way Max's voice sounded. Max pulled Aspen in for a hug.

"What happened?" Max asked, voice full of concern.

"Nothing to be concerned about, I tripped down my stairs and fell through the front window."

Max was well aware this was a lie, but she didn't want to force Aspen to tell her. Max was certain Aspen would come around in due time.

"Shouldn't you go to the hospital?" Max asked.

"Nah. Head and leg wounds just bleed. I'll be okay" Aspen replied.

Max simply nodded. "As long as you don't bleed to death, the second you look like youre gonna pass out we're going to the hospital!" Max chuckled out.

Max threw her arm around Aspen's shoulders, partially to help support her, and partially because she wanted to continue holding Aspen close. Max knew something was amiss in Aspens home life, and she made a silent vow to herself to figure out what it was, and stop it.
