Cupcakes {drei}

The bus shook as it bumped

along the road

and I was tempted to grab hold

of the bar next to me

but it would mean leaning over someone.

I scanned across the bus

that was mostly full.

A mother and child,

quite and solemn,

an old man at the back,

a group of boys that smelt

of cigarettes and body spray.

And a boy and a girl.

They were talking intently

and he was looking at her,

the way every girl wanted to be looked at.

She had a bouquet of flowers on her lap,

spinning a canary-yellow rose between

her forefinger and thumb.

I could smell spring,

even though it was winter

and Jack Frost was about,

dancing.

Someone was replacing the woman who was

getting up for her stop.

A younger girl,

about my age,

sat down next to me.

She had a cupcake in her hand

and took a bite, a smile

curving. I smiled too,

instinctively, craving cupcakes.

The girl turned her head slightly,

seeing me watch her eat.

Embarrassed, I turned away,

looking back out at the window,

trying to keep my back straight so I

wouldn't be thrown about too much.

"Do you want one?"

I turned back, and the girl

was offering me a pretty box

of pretty cupcakes.

Manners told me no,

my sweet tooth told me yes.

"Really?"

"Sure," she grinned.

"Thanks," I replied, reaching out to

pick one up.

I was cautious, worried she had drugged

the cakes or would accuse me of stealing or

something odd like that.

People don't just offer free cupcakes

to strangers on the bus.

All the same, I started to eat

and it was delicious.

"I love cupcakes," she said.

"So do I."

"And cafes, lemon ice-cream, sparkly things, caramel and England. I'm from Switzerland."

"You speak very good English."

"Thanks," she said with a laugh.

And then somehow, by the time it was my stop,

we had become friends.

The kindness of strangers.

Sometimes, friendships are formed in

the most unlikeliest of circumstances.

Sometimes serendipity

happens and it's wonderful.
