|WOLVES WITHOUT TEETH|
It was a rainy day in this memory. Not just normal rain either, like swooping to the side, hard rain. Baylor still didn't focus much on the road though, his eyes were on Harley, always carefully watching her.
Harley stared out the window, appearing to be in deep thought as she usually did.
"So what do you think?" Baylor asked.
"About what?" Harley returned in a disinterested tone.
"About Leslie. I just said that..."
"What about her?"
"She wants to know if you would like to go to the mall with her this afternoon." Baylor said. His hopeful eyes were again on Harley.
"What am I, her charity case?" Harley snapped back. The rain held her attention with a tight grip.
Baylor sighed. "No, Harley, she wants to get to know you better."
"Please, she wants to impress you. She could care less about me."
"That's not true. I think you should go." Baylor took her hand, finally ripping her gaze from the soaked window. "Please just give it a try, what if you have fun?"
Harley was skeptical of his request. "What if I don't?" She said, snatching her hand back. "Why would a girl like her want to hang out with me, unless of course she has an ulterior motive. Besides, what would we even talk about?"
"You might be surprised by what you have in common. Why can't you just try? Please, for me?" Harley gave him a dirty look. She knew she couldn't say no now.
"Fine."
Baylor smiled wide. "Thanks kiddo."
"Yeah, yeah. Just know that you owe me." She said, slumping back in her seat.
They were almost to the school.
"Let's skip to this afternoon." I said to Josiah. "I would rather not spend the remainder of my 'time' at school."
Josiah's tiny smile surfaced as he met my request. We were following Harley into the wet parking lot within seconds. Her backpack hung loosely from her shoulders.
She stood on the sidewalk, looking both ways. I assume she is looking for Leslie. She glanced at her watch several times, a look of doubt clouded her face. She dug her hand around in her purse.
Just as she pulled out her phone, Leslie's car horn beeped.
Harley glanced up. Her expression flushed to relief and disappointment at the same time.
All three of us got into the car, but only one used a door.
"Hi!" Leslie shrieked, then hugged Harley.
Harley's body went stiff with the surprise touch. It was funny, yet annoying to watch. Harley clearly isn't used to people acting this way.
"Hey..." Harley returned. She was obviously annoyed too, just as I was.
"I still don't like her." I told Josiah.
He stared at me blankly. He isn't much fun these days.
"So, I was thinking we could shop around at the mall, then grab dinner or something." Leslie said after releasing the terrified Harley. "You like shopping, right?"
"I-" Harley began, but was cut off by the over excited girl.
"Of course you do, every girl loves to shop!" Her blond curls bounced perfectly with her every move.
