I look up at the city skyline, a common sight. So common I barely think about it. Willis tower standing above all of the towers, Like an abnormality among the steady height in towers in this windy city.
And windy it was indeed, and rainy. A cold front was only 10 miles to the west of us. So a storm is on its way, and I can already hear thunder in the distance.
beeeeeeeeep! My train of thought was interrupted by my stupidity
"Get off the Damned road!" The driver of the car had rolled his window down and shouted.
"Sorry Ma'am" I joked and ran to avoid being hit by the mad driver, that seemed to always show himself immediately after school. I ran home attempting to beat the rain several more cars beeped at me, The usual "Get of the street" or something worse would spew from their mouths. I frankly couldn't give less of a crap.
Today was the day I needed to be home before my mom, so she didn't catch me watching the weather, which apparently is A waste of My time that could be used for more "practical" activities like dishes and other stuff like that.
I continued running through the alleys until I made it to my street found My building and raced up the stairs to room 649. I almost burst through the door, which is entirely possible to do given its made of glorified cardboard, but I live with it, and I'm used to it.
I threw my bag into my room. they proceeded to the kitchen and grabbed a bag of skittles. I walked to the Living room. I sat down and felt around the cluttered couch for the remote. After I found nothing I glanced around. And sure enough, it was on the end table.
"Dammit" I whispered, pushing myself over an empty Pizza box, reaching for the remote. I Grasped the closest end of the remote, pulling it towards me and pushing the red button on top. The screen flickered on and TLC was on, Each. I mashed the keypad with the numbers for the Weather Channel. It flicked on with the guy on screen talking about the cold front which was now just east of Chicago. A bolt of lightning flashed and the clap of thunder shook the house about three seconds, about half a mile away. The Radar flicked to the screen and the red was directly over top the south end of Chicago.
I was so mesmerized by the content of the screen that I nearly jump off the couch when someone knocked on the door.
I mutter a cuss and turn the T.V off, and scramble to the door. Slamming into the hollow door, I look through the peephole. A policeman and a woman. "Who are you and why are you here," I shout.
"I am Sheriff Joe Mongal," The man said
"I'm Sheriff's Deputy Anna Murr, we are here to help you" The lady said.
"I don't need any help, Why would you think that I need help?" I asked nervously
"Will you please let us in so we can take a look around son?" Sheriff Joe asked of me
"Uh, sure, my Moms not home though, the doors unlocked" I responded, walking back the the couch and sitting down on it as the police officers open the door and enter. Joe sat down next to me as I flicked the T.V. back on, they were now talking about a late snow squall that was pounding Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
"That's fine," Joe said "We'd rather not have you Mother here anyway" He informed me
"Brantley, Is it alright if I search the house for anything?" Anna asked
"Sure fine, my room is first on left, Moms is way end ,and Bathroom is first on right" I informed. She went to my room first i could here her rummaging through things.
"So why did you flick the T.V. off, you weren't watching anything but the weather" Joe questioned as I watched the screen display information that most people couldn't understand.
"My Mom doesn't like me watching any sort of television" I answered "Weather or carton channel,"i informed
"Network" Joe said.
"Proves my point, But she wont let me watch anything cause apparently I have "better" things to do" I said
"Joe!" Anna Shouted "You need to see this!"
He popped up and started to my room. "What is it?" He asked rounding the corner. HE shouted something i should never say and then apologized for it.
I ran to my door. Anna was standing with a bag of white powder in her hand "Whats That?" i ask. I already know, Mom told me it was a bag of sugar, and at the time she was the only person i could trust. I wanted to see it proven. For some reason I trusted the officer. "My mom told me it was sugar" I knew it wasn't that.
"Cocaine" Joe said "your mom lied to you" He informed, i knew it. i should've said something to those drug awareness guys.
"Yeah big time" Anna re-enforced Joe's statement.
We walked to the living room and Joe called someone in. All he said was "We are a go"
The the door opened, we all froze were we stood. My mom was standing in awe at the sight she saw. Her face was a guilty one.
"Hello Mrs. Sineos, your son let us in" Joe greeted
My mom ran and slapped me. I fell into my seat and rubbed my cheek. She almost went and did it again but Joe caught her had at its apex.
"I don't think so" He shouted with some other words mixed in.
Just then a second cop car rolled up to the apartment complex. I couldn't see it but you could hear it clear as day.
My mom cursed and cursed as loud as she could. She slipped free of Sheriff Joes hold and reared back to hit him, but Anna caught that at its apex.
"Son come with me," Joe said as he leads me down the stairs
"No! No! You cant, I had plans to use you" Mom shouts I hear from behind me.
I started crying as I heard that.
"Not no more, you're under arrest for child abuse, assaulting an officer, and other chargers I know are there but you have so many I can't remember, your son is going to a family who will care for him." I heard the clicks of handcuffs as Anna shouted in disgust at My mother
"I am loving. I-" She shouted but was cut off.
"You not loving at all, you hide Drugs in your son's room to draw the blame away from you. You won't even let him watch the weather. You know most kids don't even like to watch the weather, yet you're trying to snuff out any spark of hope your son has for a future, You disgust me not only as a policewoman but as a parent" Anna ranted.
Joe lead me down the stairs to the police cruiser that had just pulled up. on the way, we passed two other officers on their way up to my old apartment.
He opened the passenger side door and motioned for me to get in. I complied.
He got on the other side.
"Wait what about my stuff?" I asked
He got back out of the cruiser and ran up the stairs seconds later Anna and the other three emerged from the building my mom in front of them. They all crammed into the other cop car and drove off; presumably to the police station.
I waited patiently for Joe to come back. During that time my sniffling stopped as I realized all the bad things mom had done, and no longer felt bad.
It took about 10 minutes but eventually, he came down with my backpack and a duffel bag. He tossed both into the back seat of the car. Then retook his seat in the front of the car.
"So where am I going?" I asked as Joe turned the vehicle on and began down the street out of town.
"Well first you're off to O'Hare, then you're off to Marquette in The U.P., and I do believe your family is going to meet you at the airport to drive you to somewhere near Ontonagon, I think that's how you say it" he answered.
I fell back into my seat, "Well I hoped you packed my snow gear."
"I did" he answered, "They own a log home on about 150 acres of land, I think you'll Like it there." He informed.
The raining had subsided but I could see the thunderclouds in the distance. A strike of thunder flashed.
