Hiding From Infected

Chapter 4- Boston, Moving

We had been driving for almost a day and only stopped to refill once. We took back roads because the freeways were blocked. We searched some cars for food and supplies when we would come across them. Ones on the back roads were typically more stocked since they hadn't been raided. I found loads pillows so we made the floor into a bed so we could stop for the night. Everyone piled into the semi after hooking a tow cable to the pick up just in case we needed to go and couldn't get out. Sebastian and Miracle were quiet. Ryder and I spoke softly as Mason and Hunter got in the truck with us. We locked the doors and shut the door to the cabin and locked it. We stayed extremely quiet all night taking turns on watch. Ryder and I were first and second watch so we stayed up talking.

"Babe, what do you think caused the infection?" He sounded scared. I'd never heard him sound so frightened before.

"I.. I'm.. uh.. I think it might of been a simple illness but then it.. uhmm.. well.. mutated. You know?" I didn't know what to say so I was stumbling over my words.

"There isn't anything simple about this. The transformation times are all different. Stella took 6 days and 12 hours. Dara took 2 hours. My brother took 30 minutes. Your dad took what?"

"5 minutes." I looked away to stop the tears.

"Baby, I'm scared. Where are we gonna go from here?"

"Where's the map?"

I searched the glove box and pulled out the atlas we had found.

"Let's head for the nearest city and see if we can find any clues about where CEDA was setting up on this side of the U.S. because those camps will have plenty of weapons and ammo. Hopefully still some food and clean water too. Boston is circled so let's head there!"

"Do you want to leave now? Or lock ourselves in and wait til morning?"

"We'll wait til morning. Let's get some rest and move tomorrow. Let's get Mason up for his watch and sleep."

"Wait. Give him another hour. I'll stay up and explain. You get some rest."

I nodded and moved to the cabin then laid between Sebastian and Miracle with their heads on each of my arms. I slowly closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
