"Jeffory?"

I look over at the two and scowl. As I finally see this man's chisleld figure and warm smile, I feel a pang of jealousy. He looks like more of a prince then myself.

He looks like the type of man she would desire.

I scan him more closely as he kneels down, frantically asking her stupid questions. His green laced armor has streaks of red and blue and purple, most likely blood from various beings. He reeks of it. That metallic smell mixed with sweat.

How did he manage to get in here with such little injuries?

The only apparent injury on him is familiar claw marks running across his hairline and right cheek.i recognize the claws of a wyvern.  Which makes sense since he would've encountered them.

She hugs him.

I want to push him away.

"You shouldn't move so much with that gash, Katelyn. It will bleed out more." I spit out, colder then I intended. The brunet looks to me for just a second before nodding in agreement and helping her sit up against the wall once more, and having her press the wound.

The man pulls a bag off his shoulder and takes out a simple white box, metal by the sound it makes when it opens. Then, with intense concentration, continues to pull out various medical devices. Some I'm familiar with, others being a mystery.

The emerald eyes soften, as he holds up a clear vile. As he seems happy however, she starts to squirm. Immediately I panick, asking in a hiss "what is that?" I get a surprised look from Jeffory. "It's..to clean wounds."

Katelyn mutters softly, and I just barely catch her words. "It stings to apply."

He moves to touch her side, and Dave comes over to watch, probably out of pure curiosity. Reluctantly she moves her hands and squeals as he pours the unfamiliar liquid on it. She grips my hand as he tightly wraps white cloth around her waist. And during this I come to my own conclusion.

I really don't like this guy.

After this, he ties the cloth in a knot he backs up, placing things back inside the metal box carefully.

I turn my attention to her pale figure. She's trembling. I immediately think she's scared or in pain, from her posture and the tears welling in her eyes, but I find she's smiling.  She's happy.

"I just can't believe you're alive..." a tear slips down her cheek and her smile takes a turn to more of a grimace. "I thought I was the only one left. I thought I got you all killed."

His smile softens even more, and he pats her knee. "I told you I'd protect you. I promised.  And I'll get you out of here safe. You and..."

Those green eyes look to me and I feel a strange frustration wash over me. "Him...?"

I scowl "Thats Prince Travis Vulkrum to you." He blinks and smiles wider, sticking out his blood stained hand towards me. "Nice to meet you, your royal highness! I'm Jeffory."

I let my gaze switch between his eyes to his hand, then back to his eyes. Does he really think I'm going to shake his meaty paw? I don't know where it's been.

He bites his lip and laughs it off. "Are you not familiar? It's called a hand Shake."

If I didn't look at her, I wouldn't of. Katelyn saw still year filled eyes were watching me with a certain sadness. Sheet probably wants me to like him.

I shake his hand slowly. I notice his slight freckles, his sharp jawline covered in the stubble that I seem unable to grow. The bags under his eyes and the smile lines that are still there even though he looks concerned. What's that?

He's watching something beyond me. Down the road. And his grip on my hand stiffens. As he freezes in his pose. But then I hear it. The footsteps of citizens. Frantic, running and the awkward pitter-patter of children getting dragged along too.  They are fleeing.

Dave stands with a stoic expression. "Get up. All of you. They're running. And we will be less obvious in a crowd. I'll be right back. Be ready or we leave you all here. "

I start to help Katelyn to her feet when Jeffory tugs her up. She falls into him and he hugs her, as I mentally think of 20 ways to kill him as I rise to my feet.

No one says a thing as we stand there, waiting, listening to frantic feet running to the gates. They must know of the Kings death. They are probably leaving to another kingdom. No one wants to stick around in a kingdom without a Ruler.

It is chaos.  No rules. A maelstrom.
[Maelstrom: a whirlpool; vortex]

Dave comes back not 3 minutes later with 5 cloaks. He makes us all put on the thick velvet in an attempt to hide all our identities.  Even without our magic, demons are still dangerous.

I pull up my own hood, then katelyn's, picking her up bridal style since she still found it hard to stand. Jeffory walked behind Dave, and us behind him, and we set off into the sea of grey skin a terrified faces.
