It appears I've woken up first. I groggily open my eyes and focus on the blue hair my face was hidden in. It smelled good, even though its been a few days at least since its been washed. I smile into her hair and adjust myself to be closer to her, only then realizing how tangled up our limbs were.
I cant move without waking her up. Great. I'm not complaining, but I'm pretty sure our positioning in the tower isn't safe for much longer. Surely by now they have figured out that I escaped and are probably sending out troops searching for me. They probably know I can't get far by myself, but what they don't know is that Katelyn is with me. They guard the front gate and close off magic, but by doing this they made themselves in a worse position.
I feel her stir in my arms and I look down again at her behead- messy blue locks. She turns her head up and I smile upon the sight of her ice blue eyes finding my own. She was so beautiful. Even if she was scowling at me. "You're a jerk."
I laugh and untangle her from me, looking back down at her as I sit up. "Why is that?" She sits up and massaged her neck, turning herself away from me. "You left a mark. You're a jerk." Oh right. I find myself laughing a bit more. "I mean, its just a love bite. It's nothing major." I feel her glare as I look away, standing to stretch and crack my joints that got stiff overnight. A very feminine scoff.
"Okay, that's nasty."I turn just enough to see her, then smirk softly to myself. "Well, I think you secretly love it, just like how you loved it when I left that mark-" she speaks before I continue. "-AH! No! I...um...Didn't. Stop. We...have important things to do." Letting myself nod, I let her win this time. Besides, Ill have forever to tease her when this is over.
We first took about 10 minutes to quickly eat some fruit I stored away when I left my room. Letting her be in charge, of course, she made me carry a dagger she found somewhere in the room. Katelyn secured it to my belt somehow and then looked me dead in the eye. "Travis. Listen." I knew I wasn't going to like what she was going to say next. Her shiny, sapphire like eyes soften and the long stern line of her mouth curved into a frown. "Look...I know you've probably...made many friends here in the castle. You know, like the people who delivered food when they could, even if told not to. You can't....trust these people anymore. If you come across them, I need you too...." Her gentle tone trailing off into a sigh. I'm about to ask her when she begins again, her eyes downcast. "I need to depend on you to not give away your position. If they notice you, you need to end them. for your own sake. Its not easy, but hopefully we wont be separated and I'll be there to do that for you."
I knew I wouldn't like it. Though, I say nothing on the subject. I can't seem to muster the words. I can't tell her that I'm unable to end anyone's life. It's not fair to take away something precious like that, right? How could anyone actually be so cruel....This even coming from a demon like myself.
"The first time is the hardest, of course. The guilt....but you get over it eventually. Soon it just seems like a game. A sick, sick game you're playing over and over again."
(How do you like the picture? Should I add more of these visuals?)
All I found myself able to do is stare. I knew Katelyn was a guard, but I didn't realize things weren't....perfect where she's from. She has murdered people. Maybe even innocent people. How can a girl like this....be so heartless. She doesn't seem like that kind of person.
The topic seems to drop itself. We both don't go on, and we also remain silent as she packs what may prove useful into a satchel I recall to be my mothers. From what I saw, she packs a couple of face clothes, a bottle able to retain liquids, and what was left of the fruit, as mushy as it began to be.
And so we were ready. As we walk down the stairs to the other room, Katelyn's fist smashes through a display case-like thing holding an old, magic sword. Its long, sharp blade once slayed many, many humans. It belonged to a demon by the name of Bram. Bram the slayer. And now that dark tainted sword was resting in the delicate hands of another slayer. This one a demon slayer.
Katelyn, of the jury of nine.
Its magic was strong. If anyone unworthy was to hold it, its said that they would....bleed very graphically. It would be disastrous if that happened to her, so you can imagine my concern when she took it out of the broken case, but, all magic is banned. And lets hope it remains that way.
"There." The first word between us for at least half an hour. She attaches the sheath to her belt and looks to me with a small smile. I send her one in return and glance down to her hands, minimal blood seeping through her surprising 4 cuts on her fists. She must have done this before, to break glass with such little injury. Thats....a basic life skill, I'm sure.
We soon tread lightly through the dark servant halls. Katelyn decided since so many guards were at the edge of the kingdom, there would hardly be anyone guarding the castle. We could just go to a side door. The only problem with that is, there is no....side door. One way in. One way out. The front door. And although she won't say it. She definitely knows how big of a problem that is. The risk is a major one. And we need to get there without being seen. Which is worse for us.
We reach the end of the hallway and before us was the door to the maids quarters. This is where they sleep, eat and fold the castles garments. Our castle has hundreds of maids, however, and they all have many different jobs. There is bound to be someone in here....But maybe we will get lucky and not have to....kill anyone who works here. they are all so sweet. well, as sweet as demons can get.
Katelyn turns the knob and slowly opens it to the dimly lit room. Torches were not as bright when manually lit, and not as reliable. they burn out too quickly. I'm assuming it was the lack of response from the door opening that made her step into the room. I feel something though...this just...feels off.
She spins back on her heel and sends me a smile.
My mouth gapes and I try and warn her....
But I'm a moment too late.
I see her get tackled to the ground in a flash of armor. The surprised yelp from the blue haired guard makes me jump forward in a burst of courage to save her. I pull out my dagger from my belt and to my own shock,
I only hear laughter.
((HEY THERE! I'M NOT DEAD! And I am so, so sorry. I meant to publish this chapter days ago, but I honestly got so caught up in school that it slipped my mind. I'm sorry again, I know these chapters take a long time. I really do hate making anyone wait, so I'm really grateful for all of you who are still with me through these stupidly long waits. I love you guys. Have I mentioned that before? heh....Its true though. the amount of reads makes me very happy, and every time I get a comment, I swear to you I squeal and rush to see what you all have to say. Even if I forget to reply sometimes. {oops} but anyway, I promise Ill try and get a new chapter up sooner this time. bye! <3))
