Chapter 1
I gaze out the sliding glass door in the back of my house. In the distance away is the willow tree my father would take me out to as a child. The willow tree is strong and visible, quickly picking it out amongst the other trees. I stare at my husband and daughter who sit in the tree, I can hear faint laughter and shouting. I catch myself smiling, I turn away from the door when I hear arguing coming from upstairs.
"Boys!" I call up to them. The bickering abruptly stops. I avert my attention back outside to the silhouette of Salix, and our daughter heading back inside. They laugh as they enter the house, Salix is still wearing the suit that he wore to work earlier today, he takes her out the minute he gets home nearly everyday. His hair is slicked back, still the same, if not longer, length it was years ago when I first met him. He likes it slicked back so he has no strands falling in his face like he always use to. He turns to face our daughter revealing the scar he had gotten from Carter many years ago, it still looks as it did the day it happened. He isn't insecure from it, and it didn't scar any of his important frontal features, minus his entire right ear.
My daughter she is the spitting image of him. She has long brown hair and gleaming light amber brown eyes. She has Salix's laugh too, they spend so much time together, she loves him, aspires be just like him. It reminds me of my father and I. The way I thought of my father as my role model and is the same as how she thinks of Salix, that he is almighty, the best person to ever walk the face of the planet. She adores him, and he adores her.
"Did you two have fun?" I say petting my daughters hair. She looks at Salix smiling and nods her head. "Good. Why don't you grab Dax and Syrus, dinner's almost ready." I ask. She dashes to the stairs her feet making a pounding noise when it hits every step going up. Salix laughs and looks at me, he's gorgeous and still looks exactly the same, as if he has aged. After we rebuilt the Nation together with the help of some friends, we decided on new laws and rules that didn't single anybody out. Our Nation goes by peace, wisdom, and bravery, every individual must follow all three characteristics, but may choose any one for their career. The Nation isn't split into Sectors, you don't take a test when you're 18, but at that age is when you commit to a Sector and start training to work in that Sector. When you decide you pick a career in any characteristic you want based off ranking and skill. You can choose to live with your family even if it's in another Sector. We decided to make the rules more free and liberating, you can live wherever you want, and marry whomever you please.
Salix is in charge of all the careers regarding peace. Besides according to the old rules of the Nation he was the right fit, the true born leader to be in charge of peace sector. He is strong, which proved back in the day when I first met him, but it protection and now bravery, it isn't where his heart belongs. Ramona Miller is in charge of all careers regarding bravery, she was and still is the bravest women I have ever met. There is no one I could see for that job other than her. I deal with all the careers regarding wisdom, my place has always with wisdom, my father raised me for this role, this job, there was no career I would want. Being in Protection Sector for the short time I was, it was interesting and I was seemingly good at it, but I felt and still do feel like wisdom is my home, it has always been where I'm meant to be. Together we make up the Nation's benevolent leaders, a democracy, we maintain the three characteristics in the Nation. We help maintain stability, intelligence and defense to the Nation. The Nation is finally happy, there are no more lies in government, no more hidden secrets and corruption, no more fear. Everyday within these walls are nothing but smiling faces, it's an extreme difference from when I was growing up.
My children, make it all worthwhile to keep the Nation like this, to have them grow up and have dreams, option, and opportunity to do whatever they please, and the freedom to do so. Dax, my eldest, is turning eighteen this year, in two days to be exact, he gets to make his decision in one month, and if I know my son he will be choosing bravery, which I'm proud of. Dax has hazel eyes and really dark brown hair that is almost black. He has Salix's features but my round face. Bravery will be good for him, Ramona is a great leader and has gathered a great army, a great defense, not that we've had to use it since Carter, but I know she'll make him the best. It's been quiet, peaceful here in the Nation that we haven't had to use any of our trained soldiers, but that doesn't mean we don't need them for crimes still going around the Nation. Carter may be gone but people are still born criminals.
