Chapter 4:The transformation

I felt myself getting light headed as water filled my eyes, my ears, my nose. I made the mistake of opening my mouth, and then I felt my body relax. Was I dead? What was happening to me? Suddenly, I realized I was not drowning, I was breathing, underwater! How was this possible? I looked down at my body, and instead of seeing my legs, I saw a beautiful, white, scaly tail, and a scaly white bra to match. I was still confused, how did this explain how I could breathe underwater? Suddenly, Penelope dove under the water with me, and some how, said "How are you liking it so far?" under the water? How was this possible? I just stared at her, very awestruck, and confused. How did all of this happen? And further more, why did it happen to me? 

I am not anything special. My parents don't even care about me, they never have. I am not the most beautiful girl in school, with the best grades, and the boyfriend to die for.   I am not the most popular girl in school, I am not anything special. I am just me, Sapphire, the girl in the corner who is all alone, who never talks to anyone, who no one wants to be around. I am a nobody.. or so I thought..

"Try it" Penelope said, still underwater"try speaking underwater".  I started to open my mouth, then  got scared, what if I drown? What if I can't talk underwater like she can? "O-ok" I said, underwater, then I stared at my mouth, amazed. I did not know it was possible to speak underwater, let alone, I could do it without training. "Sorry I scared you" Penelope said, smiling" It's the best way for a mermaid to get her tail when they have not lived underwater their whole lives". "It's okay" I said, still marveling at my new found power of speaking underwater. "Now, for you next lesson, you will learn how to swim in your tail," Penelope said, smiling, and slightly laughing. I looked down at my tail, I had completely forgotten about it! It was beautiful, with it's white scales, in the most beautiful design imaginable. I loved it. I looked at her tail, it was green, with little specks of blue hear and there. She raised me back up to the surface, and I instantly got cold, and it felt weird to be out of the water. It had always felt weird for me, leaving the water, after I had been in it for any length of time. I always felt at home under the water, and now I know why. I am a mermaid, and I never knew it. "Now" Penelope said sternly"try to flip your tail". I tried to move my tail, but if felt like a pound of bricks, it would not budge. "Come on, try" Penelope encouraged"try harder." I tried to concentrate all my strength to my tail, and I was able to flip it one time. It took so much out of me, I felt like I had just run a marathon, I was panting like a dog for oxygen. "Good" Penelope said smiling"now, again". Did she just say that? Did she just say she wanted me to do that again? "Again?" I asked, looking at her, sadly. "Again." Penelope stated. I tried to slip my tail again, this time it took less energy than the last time, but I was still winded when I did flip my tail. "Again." Penelope said, not giving me any time to rest. So, I did it again, and then I did it a second time, because I knew she make me do it again, but I was hoping that if she saw me do it twice, I would get a break. "All right" Penelope said, "that's enough tail practice for today, now it's time for you to work on your powers." Powers, what? I have powers? What powers do I have? How can I use them? How did I get them?
