The Wolf Inside

Chapter 5

After an hour of walking, we reach pack Black Claw's territory. Suddenly, all the memories i tried so hard to forget and lock away come rushing back. Tears blur my vision but i brush them away. "Throw them jn the dungeon. I will deal with the later" says Jake. A burly man walks towards us. He pushes us towards a cave that had stairs carved into it that led downwards. I know this place all too well. My dad used to send criminals down here. Its so horrible because its always pitch black to the point that it almost suffocates you. There are dangerous beasts locked down here too for people who are so bad that they need to have monsters launched upon them.

I shiver because of the cold temperature. The burly man threw us into a cell, locked the cell and walked away with a smirk. I sit down and lean against the cold, stone wall of the cell. Shane stood, his back to the bars of the cell with his arms crossed against his chest. He glares at me. I look down.

"I'm sorry okay?! I dont't know where they came from and how they ended up chasing me into your territory" i lie. I know where he came from and how he ended up chasing me into pack Blue Moon territory. I lead him there. I could have ran anywhere else, but no, i just HAD to have run back and endanger the whole pack. The guilt coursing through me is undescribable. "Don't think you can lie to me! You know who he is, where he came from, why he's after you?" Shane says in a low voice, his eyes flashing. I stay silent. I dont like where this conversation is going.

"I want answers. Start talking" he orders.
I dont say anything.
" i said i WANT answers" he says loudly.
"I dont know what you're talking about" i say playing dumb. He sighs and sits down. "Meeting you was just another reminder of why i shouldn't allow anyone to come into my pack or trust anyone".
I frown. I could care less about what he says. "Well you should have realized that earlier because i tried to leave. I was going to leave when YOU stopped me. So dont say that i should have left" i argue.
He glares at me. "Anyway, why would you do something like this after all my pack and i have done for you. We let you stay with us, we gave you food and water and a place to stay so this is how you repay us?!".
I sigh. What did I ever do?
"Listen... i never asked you to do all those kind acts. I told you i never deserved those but you did them anyway" i whisper.
"It was your fault though that you wandered into my territory" he answers.
"Yeah. It was my fault. This is all my fault. I didn't know that when i was running from him, i was leading him to your territory. I'm sorry. So since this is my fault, I'm going to fix it" I say.
He stares blankly. "What are you going to do?"
I roll my eyes. "Get you out, duh" i say plainly.
"How? And what do you mean by me? Arent you going to escape?" He asks.
I shake my head. "No. I already endangered enough people" i say. "I don't know what that wolf wants but i am going to submit myself over to him".
That was a lie. I know what Jake wants. He wants to kill me so that there is no threat to him being alpha. I was supposed to become alpha but with him around, no way that is happening.
"Okay, i get i am mad at you but those are things to be continued discussed later. YOU have to get out too" he tells me.
I laugh. "Weird isn't it? That a moment before you were telling me that you shouldn't have met me or trusted me and now you are telling me to escape and go with you?".
Shane looks away. "I told you that those are things to be discussed later. And its not like I'm telling you to go die or something".
I shake my head. "Nope. I am staying here. Final".
He grins. "Okay then. I am staying here. That is final" he says being stubborn.
Trying to be smart huh? Not happening. "Okay. You can stay here and die too. Don't tell me after that i invited you to your death in which you were constantly tortured and possibly burned alive" i exaggerate.
Shane sighs and stays put.
"Fine i will come too. But we have to hurry" i say.

I tell him quickly about my plan. "So, listen closely. There are trap doors here in the prison cells. Almost one in each. They are meant to throw prisoners down into a pit of fire. But, there is a way to avoid the pit. If you jump down, there are bars on the side of the rock. They lead up, so you to grab one quickly and go from there. After, the bars lead to the alpha's cave. We have to be very careful and lucky to avoid him. The alpha's cave is the closest to the forest. When we get there safely we can run".

Shane looks extremely suspicious of me but i don't care. He shakes his head. "Impressive but weird too. How do you know so much about around here?". "I have been sent to this prison before many times" i say. He gives me a look. I sigh. He caught the lie. "Okay okay. I will tell you later" i say. He nods.

We set our plan to work. The way to the trap door is by pressing a hand to a brick on the stone wall. The wall moves revealing another. But this one has a door. I push open the door as it creaks. Looking around to see if anyone is watching, we step inside. Right in front, is a huge drop to a bottemless pit of fire. I start sweating and i can see Shane is too, from the extreme heat. The pit is small, small enough to fit one person. A meter or so away is the opposite side of the wall which has the bars.

"Remember grab onto the bars quickly" i say. He nods. "I'll go first" he offers. He jumps, pushing himself to the other side and at the last second when i thought he wasn't going to make it, grabbed the first bar. He pushes himself up and makes his way up the ladder. "Hurry up" he yells.

I jump with all my strength and grab the bar. I follow Shane up. "Be careful to make sure the alpha isn't there" i remind. After painfully climbing up the bars, we reach a small hole in the rock. Shane peaks through. He signaled me to come up. We scramble out of the hole and find ourselves in a vast cave.

Memories flood back into my head. I grew up in this cave, i ate here, i slept here. Although i never liked being a part of pack Black Claw, it was where i grew up, where i lived. "Hey" Shane says waving a hand in my face. "What happened?". I shake my head. "Nothing". We look out of the cave to make sure no one is there. The place was mostly empty except for a few pups playing around. This was usually hunting time and most of the wolves went to hunt or were in their caves.

I look around at our surroundings. There were many caves all in a semi circle with the forest facing them. The leaves on these trees were so thick and large they blocked out a lot of light and intruders as well, since they were hard to get past.

"Okay, coast is clear. Let's run" i say. We shift to wolves and then run quickly out of sight and into the dark forest. After about 15 minutes, we stop to catch our breath. "H-how...b-big....is...the pack's territory?" Shane pants switching to human form. I shake my head. "I don't know" i reply. I actually don't. My training to become the next alpha started was only a year ago.

As we catch our breaths, Shane asks the questions i had been dreading.
"How do you know so much about pack Black Claw? And why is their stupid alpha after you?".
