MAKE YOUR CHARACTERS WHOLE
When writing a story, the most commonly stated about a character is usually their physical characteristics.
Of course, you have to have a clear concept of how your character looks like in your head. What color is their hair? What color are their eyes? Are their teeth straight? How tall are they?
Having the image of your character in your head is always useful in describing what is happening in the story. Little details like "His soft hands took my smaller ones and rubbed them to keep them warm..." really add some more umph in the scene and enable the reader to visualize the scene more clearly.
However, physical characteristics are not the only things that make a character. Of course, they needs to have a clear personality. One of the defining details about the character's personality is their backstory.
It helps to have a backstory for your character. Who were they before the start of the story? What made them act the way they are acting now?
If you ever encounter a standstill while writing, try to write down your character's whole backstory. It may just jolt your writing senses and inspire you to write the next scenes.
Hope this helped.
