It was a tranquil Saturday afternoon when they decided to sit by the Beau Lake and watch the sun colour the sky in striking orange and red before it dives deep behind the lake. Alex brought his camera along and decided to take the chance to capture some beautiful pictures, hoping they'd get him some little earnings.
"The view is so mesmerizing. Tell me Sam, what do you do in your life?" Alex blurted out the question in an attempt to cut her silence. She was too indulged into the scenery of the beautiful sunset sky as the birds flew in flocks in harmony to the warmth of their nests before the night falls. Alex couldn't resist freezing that scene into a photograph.
"Me?" She turned around, lifting her hair in a long tight pony tail. "I used to do so many things." She stretched out the words in exaggeration. "But, after leaving David I just felt the need to let go of everything and free myself. I also had to prepare myself for my journey in medical school so," She snickered a laugh that was joyful and full of life, it made Alex join her.
"What were the things you used to do?" He questioned in curiosity, trying to keep her in the posture she was holding.
She was sitting on the bench in front of Alex, spreading the skirt she was wearing to the sides and staring at the sky. The sunlight was making her features glow and seem outlined, a perfect portrait. Alex thought.
"Well, for instance, I used to be a ballerina in the National Opera House but I stopped a few years ago. I also used to play tennis, badminton and volleyball as side-hobbies. I was pretty much a sports addict, David would often be jealous." She laughed lightly, finishing off her sentence as Alex turned off his camera and sat beside her.
"Do you ever miss him?"
"I don't think I really do. Lonely nights really get me into thinking this way though, that's why I prefer to sleep early." She joked, taking off her glasses and holding them in her hand.
Sam had a way of turning all her miseries into laughs, it always had Alex wondering whether she really had that strength or she was just wearing a mask to hide her vulnerability.
"You keep asking me questions and it feels like I'm the only one talking." Sam confessed in a sigh while she traced the roses printed on her skirt with her glasses. "Is it my turn to ask now?"
"Of course, go ahead." He whispered as he watched the sky colour slowly darken, welcoming the night.
"Do you think the Poet was right?" Her voice adapted a serious tone as she turned to look at Alex with great curiosity.
"About what?"
"About the folders. After two days of deep thinking, I believe he was right." She stated, only to have Alex knit his eyebrows at her in complete confusion. "I mean, what if my folder said that I'm now at home having some meat on my sofa? My folder can say anything and I'd still do whatever I want. The whole thing doesn't make sense because some words are definitely not going to rule my entire life, especially that it's not the holy book or the scenario of my upcoming movie." She mockingly laughed.
"If folders were written already, we would have all stayed at home in front of our televisions and received our folders by the end without any effort." He mumbled as he shared his thoughts with her. "Maybe you're right."
"We'll never know where the truth lies though," She sighed deeply, lowering her head over her chest in desperation.
"We can try to know the secrets behind this." Alex said while Sam slowly changed her position to have a clearer view of him, rather than the beautiful nature lying in front of them.
"How?"
"I have no idea." He whispered.
Alex knew this seemed to be such a huge puzzle that no one has ever tried to solve. No one had the dreamy brain of Alex, and although it sounded like science-fiction to Sam's ears, he had already set his mind to unlocking these secret doors. Or to at least try.
