Sticky situations

"Wait so let me get this straight. I," I gestured to myself, "have to supervise her," I gestured to my friend's twin sister, "while she's at a party?"

When I got a nod from the both of them like bobbleheads during an earthquake, I snort.

"Ahaha, good one. No."

Without another look behind me, I head for the front door prepared to sprint if I absolutely had to.

"But Dana!" My friend cried, extending my name for at least 5 seconds too long once again and grabbing onto my foot to keep me from leaving.

I sighed, and with my hand limp on the doorknob, turned around to shoot a half glance half glare at the two of them.

"You totally owe me for this."

Sam leaps from her position on the ground with a happy grin and releases my leg in the process.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely thought about yelling, "Haha sucka, just kidding," and running out the door and all the way home. But I didn't.

I would either live to regret this moment or appreciate it and right now only the future can tell.

"Why does she need a chaperone? We're 17," I asked.

They both spoke at the same time, Sam's voice drowning under Syd's.

"It's not really a chaperone, I just handle my liquor really bad."

"That's because you're not 21."

"Wait, is that really why?"

I glanced at my friend Sam and basically pleaded for her to say, 'nevermind, you don't have to watch over her' with my eyes. It became clear after a few seconds those words were not going to come out of her mouth. At least she had the decency to look apologetic.

I shook my head pinching my eyes, "No, that isn't why. When is the party?"

"It's uh kind of tonight," Syd explained with hesitancy and a large smile. I could hear the question mark on the end of her sentence.

I sighed.

Sam shooed Syd out their room for the time being and I collapsed on the bed.

"Why does Sam make me do things I don't want to do?" I sigh to no one in particular, though Sam is my only audience.

"Oh hush. I'm only asking you for this because I have a date with Tristen tonight!" Sam exclaimed.

"What!? You never told me!" I all but shouted.

I had now changed my position to sitting upright and attentive so I didn't miss any details. Sam was walking to and from her conjoined closet deciding on an outfit for the night I assume.

"Would it have made you say yes to babysitting my sister the first time I asked?"

"...well no. Tell me about Tristen!"

"He asked me out the other day, and I tried to play it cool but I think he could tell I was really excited because he barely said the words 'Do you wanna..' and I was already smiling and nodding my head like crazy, so he wants to take me out to a nice dinner and then I thought he was going to say a movie, because you know, how cliche is dinner and a movie, but instead he-"

"Breathe homie," I interrupted with a laugh, and at this point began to slouch.

With this, she takes a deep breath and gives me a nervous smile, "Sorry."

Sam doesn't get asked out a lot, so I knew this was already very exciting for her with new territory to explore. She's also liked Tristen for a few months now, so I'd say things are going really well for her which is more than I can say for myself.
