Getting Jumped

Dani's POV:

I was walking home from the movie house with Ponyboy. We had seen the latest Paul Newman movie. When suddenly there was a red Corvair following us. We started running but the Corvair stopped in front of us. There were 5 Socs in the car. They got out and started grabbing me and Pony. I started fighting back and was beating the two Socs I was fighting, when suddenly I heard a scream coming from Pony. The Socs had a blade to his throat. He started yelling for Darry, Soda, Caitlin, Sapphire, and anyone else he could think of. Suddenly the Socs started running away. I felt a pair of arms help me up. It was Caitlin.

"Are you ok?" Caitlin asks me

"Yeah. I'm fine." I say

Just then Soda and Sapphire came over to us. Our gang had chased the Socs to their car and threw rocks at them. They came running toward us now--- four lean, hard guys and four girls. They were all as tough as nails and looked it. l had grown up with them, and they accepted me.

"Didya catch 'em?" Pony asks

"Nup. They got away this time, the dirty..." Two-Bit went on cheerfully, calling the Socs every name he could think of or make up, with Sammy joining in on occasion with a couple of words of her own.

"We were just comin' home from the movies. We didn't think..." I started but Darry cut me off.

"You don't ever think not at home or anywhere when it counts. You must think at school, with all those good grades you bring home, and you've always got your noses in a book, but do you ever use your heads for common sense? No sirree, kiddos. And if you did have to go by yourselves, you should have carried blades." Darry says

Soda and Sapphire were glaring at him. 

"Leave our kid siblings alone, you hear? It ain't their fault they likes to go to the movies, and it ain't their fault the Socs like to jump us." Soda says 

"Yeah and if they had been carrying a blade it would have been a good excuse for them to cut them to ribbons." Sapphire says

Soda and Sapphire always take up for us.

"When I want my kid siblings to tell me what to do with my other kid siblings, I'll ask them-- kid siblings." Darry says

But he laid off us. He always does when Sodapop tells him to. Most of the time.

He headed inside the house leaving the rest of us outside. 

"How's the kids?" Dally asks

"We're fine. What are you two doin' outta the cooler?" Pony asks Dally and Phoenix

Phoenix just smirks, while Steve comes over.

"Yeah? And what are you two doin' walkin' by your lonesome on the street?" Steve asks

"It's none of your business smarty." I say

"What do you mean, none of my business? It is my business. Look at my nose!" Steve says

"What about it? It's huge." I say

"Smart-ass. She is a smart-ass kid." Steve says

Sapphire, Soda, and Destiny start cracking up.

"Shut up." Steve says

They don't listen to him and they continue cracking up.

"Speakin' of movies... We're walkin' over to the Nightly Double tomorrow night. Anybody want to come and hunt some action?" Phoenix asks, while Dally just nods

"Me, Johnny, Jaz, and Dani'll come." Pony says

"Yeah." I said

"I'll come too." Sammy says

"I was plannin' on getting boozed up tomorrow night. If I don't, I'll walk over and find y'all." Two-Bit says

Johnny, Two-Bit, Sammy, Jazmine, Pony, Dally, Phoenix, and I were talking when suddenly we heard...

"Check this out buddy." Steve says

Steve jumps on a car and flips off and falls on his butt.

"Oh move over Steve. Now watch this." Destiny says

She jumps on the same car but does a double backflip and lands perfectly on her feet. She smirks and walks over to Steve.

"Jealous?" She asks laughing

"Shut up." Steve says

She and Steve walk off arguing. Two-Bit and Sammy get into his car and drive off. While Dally and Phoenix walk out the gate to cause trouble. 

"All right, we're heading home." Jazmine says

"Bye." I say

Later that evening

I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep. I guess Sapphire knew I was having trouble trying to sleep because she turned on her side and started talking to me.

"Listen, sis, when Darry hollers at you... he don't mean nothin'. He's just got more worries than somebody his age ought to. Don't take him serious... you dig, Dani? Don't let him bug you. He's really proud of you and Pony 'cause you're so brainy. It's just because you and him are the babies--- I mean, he loves you a lot." 

"Sure." I say, trying for Sapphire's sake to keep the sarcasm out of my voice. 

"Saph?" I ask

"Yeah?" She responds

"How come you and Soda dropped out of school?" 

"'Cause we're dumb. The only things we were passing anyway were auto mechanics and gym." She says 

"You're not dumb." I say

"Yeah, I am. Now shut up and go to sleep" She says

"Night Saph." I say

"Night lil sis." Sapphire says

Then I drift into a dreamless sleep.
