Chapter 7:
Rain sighed, and kicked at a stone on the floor, as she trudged along. Her mother had kicked her out of the house for an hour after having spent the entire day inside. She thought over everything she had done in the holidays- not much. Then she thought about school the next day. As in the first day of school in what- 7 weeks? She had lost track of the number of weeks from the first day. As she crossed the road, she heard heard a familiar laugh, though that didn't mean much, since her siren's ears gave her that ability of super good hearing. Her mother, after all was a siren, while her dad was a normal human. Someone tapped her on the shoulder, making her jump. "Hi!" A voice piped up behind her. She spun around, coming face to face with none other than Maddison.
"Oh... It's you..." She grumbled, trying to hide a smile.
"Don't sound so disappointed!" Maddy exclaimed in reply. This made Rain laugh, and they walked on, filling each other in on why they were out and about at 5:30 pm.
"So, are you excited for school to start, Rain?" Maddison enquired, as they fought their way through a clump of bushes.
"Yeah... But at the same time no..."
"I know what you're feeling. You want to go back, and see all our friends again, but also, you're gonna miss the holidays."
"Pretty much, yes."
"Well, we're all in the same boat here, Rain, so cheer up!" Maddy ended the conversation on a cheerful note- how did she do that!? She always seemed to be able to brighten people's days, no matter how bad they were. No wonder she had split up with Leo. He was the complete opposite of her, always gloomy, and downhearted, though Rain supposed if she were in his position, she would probably be the same- people were always picking on him. "Rain?" Maddison asked in a thoughtful voice, interrupting Rains train of thoughts.
"Yeah?"
"You know Amy?" Maddison sounded tentative, as if touching on a sore subject.
"Uh... Yeah..."
"Well, she ran into HIM again, and... Well, she's not looking too good..."
"NO way! Is that why you're out here then!? Because you had to think about what to do?"
"Well, originally, yes, but it seems that her mother wheedled it out if me, and well...she ended up phoning school. I don't know what happened to him though."
"I hope he gets expelled! He deserves it!"
"But... Even if he does... What's that gonna help with!? I mean, he can still run into her everywhere, and, what if-
"No! Maddy, we can't let us think that that will happen. That's a worst case scenario, and above all else, we won't LET it happen in the first place!
She returned home after an hour and a half, racing upstairs, to her tablet. She had recently found an interesting new server, and was enjoying meeting new people on it. However, the second she had logged into her account, her father called up the stairs for dinner. Darn! Tomorrow was school, and she couldn't afford to be late on the first day back!
That night, she dreamt of the holidays, and what she could have done, had she bothered to get up, off her lazy gluteus Maximus, and what she could have prevented. She dreamt of what the school year could have become, rather than what it was going to become now. Now all she could see was a boy, standing alone in the darkness. Just looking upon his face made her regret something, more then anything else in the world. Just what was it that she was regretting!? He started to scream. He wouldn't stop. He fumed - for crying out crying out loud- what had she done? She wanted to wake up. She didn't want to face whatever she had done to make her feel like this. No life time of purity could make up for what pain she felt...If only she knew what she had done, so she could have the slightest idea of how to tackle this guilt! All she knew, was that it had something to do with the person that the kid hated the most in the world...
