Get Your Spy On
Chapter 16
Eric’s POV
I wake up on Wendy’s bedroom floor next to Alex. He’s snoring lightly, and he’s taken all the blankets. I sit up, wiping my eyes until I can see thoroughly. Wendy and Sloane are asleep, their heads turned to each other. I try to stand up, but I’m in pain. I wince and let out a gasp. I see bruises covering my body, and every ounce of me is stinging. We ran farther than we usually do too. I can’t believe the pain that’s running through my body.
As I try to move again, my leg hits Alex’s leg. His eyes snap open, and he sits upright, his eyes scanning the room for danger. When he sees me, he relaxes and lays back down, moaning. Wendy wakes up, blinking her hazel eyes at me. She smiles, and then gets up. She isn’t sore like I am, that’s probably because she didn’t get hit nearly as much as I did.
I try to stand up with her, and let out a whimper. She stares at me curiously, “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know,” I say my voice cracking. I clear my throat, and then try to answer her again. “I think I’m just sore.”
She grabs my arms, and pulls me up, pretending not to hear me whimper even more. I try taking a few steps, but I feel my legs giving out on me. I hear snickering behind me, Alex. I turn around and see him staring at me, his laughs getting louder.
I’m about to make a remark, but Sloane leans over Wendy’s bed with a pillow and smacks him with it repeatedly until his laughs turned into muffled yells. Wendy giggles, and then she helps me down the stairs, which is excruciating.
Wendy’s mom is on the couch with a plate of toast and a glass of juice. She glances up at me, and looks back at the television. After a moment, she does a double take, her mouth widening. “Wendy-“
“Oh gosh, mom, no!” Wendy says, blushing deeply. “The rest of the squad is in my room. We had an unexpected-“
“I don’t want to hear it,” Mrs. Pierce said, shaking her head. “All that spy stuff is confusing.”
Wendy turns to me and mouths an apology, and I tell her it’s fine. Personally the spy stuff is confusing to me too. Especially with what happened yesterday. Wendy and I make breakfast, both of us lost in our thoughts. I hear two set of feet thumping down the stairs, and then Sloane and Alex appear.
“Your hair looks like a birds nest,” I note to Sloane.
She sticks her tongue out at me, and then plops on a chair. Alex sticks his finger in Sloane’s hair and pretends to get his finger stuck. Sloane punches him in the arm, and I see her wince. There’s a long gash on her arm that I didn’t notice, and there’s a big bruise on her cheek.
“What happened to you?” Wendy asks Sloane.
“Those spies don’t like it when you resist,” she says, her face darkening. “They tried to put a cloth in my face to make me pass out, but I wrapped it around one of the spies instead. Two men started hitting me with something until I fell to the ground.”
“Well I didn’t put up a fight because I thought they were putting me on a last minute mission,” Alex says, shaking his head.
Wendy and I don’t talk about what happened to us, but I’m sure ours were as unpleasant as theirs. Maggie and Neil were asleep, and they didn’t wake up when the spies got inside. To be honest though, I didn’t hear them until they were in the hallway. When they got into my room I killed one of them, and then the other guys grabbed me and held me down to my bed.
