4 months later
There. Right there on the shore of the lake. Lucy wearing a white dress accented with gold and her maid of honor, Levy, in the dress she wore in her own wedding. I had Gray come over and be my best man. He was more than eager to be here for me, even with Juvia almost two thirds through with her carrying of their baby.
It took me a long time, but after some conversing, Mira could come back. She's been training more soldiers and helping Erza with battle strategy. And, besides that, she's caring for her newborn. Now it may not have her white hair, but it looks just like her. And the real kicker is that she has the same eyes and hair as Laxus.
We are married in the light of the setting sun with the lake, burn orange, in the background. Mira was so happy for us. We toasted to our union and ate a great feast. Gray and I helped ourselves to most of it. Lucy ate her fair share, too. I mean, being a little under five months pregnant must make you able to eat like a god.
Now, Lucy is in the refurbished study, practicing her writing by making letters to her friends. Levy instructed her to send letters so that she can have them help her when she goes into labor. I am eagerly anticipating a son. He will be my greatest success and honor. I will teach him how to use magic and fight. I'll give him the schooling I never got.
With the house complete, I bid farewell to my position at the prison. I'm glad that I won't have to return to night shifts. Though, I will miss this one prisoner. We talk for a while, every day. He would always talk about his daughter. He used to love her, but he lost her due to his own selfishness. I, in turn, would tell him all about Lucy.
The last thing he says to me as I shake his hand is, "Lucy was the name of my girl, too." I smile at him.
"You're a good friend, Jude. I'm sorry for what's about to happen." When I'm out of the building, I hear the crows cheering for him as he is lead away to the Coliseum. He is to face the lion for the act of theft and destruction of property. I can only hope that he is killed quickly. I don't want him to suffer. Poor fool will probably try to fight, though. They always do and so few ever make it out.
I enter Jellal's office to return my sword to the armory and my uniform. I can here him talking to someone. I knock, but I get an acrimonious shout back. I'd know that voice and tone anywhere. Obviously, Jellal pissed off Erza. She's pry giving him an ear full for something about strategy or the war. I wait outside his office for the next hour. I hear her whining and and yelling and him griping about how something can't happen or that he's busy. Finally, he agrees to something, because Erza lets me in.
I greet her with a smile and a tilt of the head. She smiles at me and walks back over to Jellal. After a quick kiss on the cheek, Erza leaves.
"I see you've given up that fiancé bit. About time, too. From what I've heard from Mira, the war is getting worse and we might be leaving soon," I inform him.
A shadow falls over Jellal's face and he says, "I know. That's exactly why I did. I'd regret it if I hadn't and will regret it if I lose her. We're in hard times, Natsu Dragneel." I nod and turn in my things. He stops me.
"No need to give those back. Keep them. They might help you, one day. I mean, you can never tell when you'll have to make another escape with the daughter of a wealthy patrician." I look at Jellal with a mix of horror and respect. He laughs at me. "Don't worry. Everything is fine. Levy and Gajeel are married and were given a blessing" I nod, salute the commander, and leave.
I stop at the homes of Levy, Juvia, and Mira and hand them each a letter from Lucy. They thank me and I continue on to work with Gajeel. I stay with him and Levy, for the week, and we make many new things. I make sure that I leave him with plenty of items to sell. When the week ends, I return home.
Lucy hugs me and greets me, when I come into view. I kiss her forehead and place a hand on her stomach. She smiles and strokes my hair. She asks me about my week at work and I tell her all about it. I plop my bag of dirty clothes down, on the floor by the door to the washroom.
"Why do you still have your sword and guard's helm?" Lucy asks.
"Jellal let me keep it. You'd like Jellal, if you got to meet him. I would introduce you to him, but he's always either out on business or in his office, doing work. Well, I suppose he does make some room for Erza, too."
"Erza is spending time with someone? I mean, she told me that she liked one of her friends a bit too much, but I never could guess who," explains Lucy. "A thought she was joking around and talking about that cake she likes so much." We laugh and sit down for supper, but get no farther than me helping Lucy pick out some vegetables, when there's a knock on the door. With a quick look at Lucy, I go to investigate.
