~Chapter 3:

"Anna, you really should stop figthting already," Tommy says from the passenger seat of my 1967 Chevy Impala. A birthday gift from my dad, since he knew I had a thing for this kind of car. I sigh. We have this argument every time I have to go to school with my face looking less than perfect. Today, it was a black eye. Nothing my pair of Ray Bans couldn't hide.

I give Tommy a look and say, "Can you give me whatever you're snorting? Because you must be high." He laughs, and I say, "No, seriously. I won't stop Tommy. If I can't fight in the octogon, I'll fight on the streets. It's what I live for." Without even missing a beat he says, "Besides all those grand jetés."

I laugh and gently punch his arm. I say gently because, even though Tommy beefed out by our sophmore year, I could still hurt him if I wanted to.

We finally arrive at the public High school, which Tommy attends. Not having the kind of income that I'm fortunate enough to have, Tommy's single father can't afford to send Tommy to one of the many private schools here in Seattle. He toughs out public school, and from I understand he's fairly popular, a big change from middle school. He's the Star of the Football team there, the 3rd best wide receiver in the state. I go to all of his football games.

I begin the 5 minute drive to my own school, contemplating Tommy's words the whole time. I undertand where he's coming from, but he doesn't understand me. I haven't told him the whole story. He doesn't know about my dad....

When I finally get to my school, I park in my usual spot as far away from the school as possible. I pull out my Ray Bans from school bag and put them on, and then it's off to purgatory. I begin the walk to the inside of the school and to my locker. I make sure not to run into any of the Barbie and Ken dolls as they bustle about in swarms so that nobody will notice me. I've learned that by keeping my head down I can easily fit in and become undectected.

5 minutes before the first bell rings and I'm already in my seat at the back of the class. The teacher comes into the room unsurprised by my punctuality. Even the teachers can't tell I exist. Just the way I like it.

Once I started fighting, I knew I'd be getting a reputation. I didn't want any attention attracted to me when I went to school and stuff. I shut everyone out, and I never use my full name at any fights. At school, I cover up as much of the bruises and cuts as I can and keep my head down so nobody can start any gossip.

I pull out my iPhone as I wait for the classroom to fill up. Nobody sits near me, and the teacher doesn't bother to call on me for answers. I take notes, and finish the assigned homework before second period.

All my classes are the same like that.

When lunch comes, I breathe out a sigh of relief and make my way to the student parking lot. I drive to pick up Tommy for lunch. While at my school anyone is allowed to leave for lunch, at the public schools they only allow seniors to do that. So this year I get to spend my lunch with my only friend. my lunch period starts before his, and I have study hall sixth period, so it's easy to get him and srop him off without missing any classes.

As I pull up to the front of the school, I see Tommy sucking face with the one of his "regulars". In the middle of his tonsil-hockey session he happens to open his eyes and see me there. I dramatically gag and make sick faces as he still hasn't pried his mouth away from the girl's. Finally, he pulls away and waves goodbye to the girl as he gets into the car.

I punch him in the arm. "I would like to eat sometime today," I say sarcastically. He rolls his eyes and nudges me playfully. "Come on Anna, you know you liked the show," he says while wagging his eyebrows wolfishly at me.

We go to McDonald's. I order a 10 piece McNugget and Tommy orders 3 Big Macs (ew). We eat in silence for a while, then Tommy asks, "So how's the scene over on the other side of the rainbow?" I roll my eyes. "Fine I guess. I'm sure it's the same as your school just with more rings coming off suring fights instead of weaves." He cracks up.

"Oh yeah, there's supposedly this party tomorrow night that some of my friends got invited to that's supposed to be hosted by one of your little chumps," he winks playfully. "I got invited, care to join me?"

I ponder his invitation for a moment. I know why he's doing it. He wants to get me off the streets for at least one night. He sees the look on my face and says, "Come on Anna, just one night is all I'm asking for. He gives me the puppy dog face. I sigh. "Fine, but if I'm not having the time of my life I'm ditching and going to find a good fight."

His entire face lights up. It's like I just gave him the best gift ever. He takes our empty containers and as he gets up to throw them in the trash, he kisses me lightly on the cheek. "You're the best Annie," he says with a wink. He's the only one I would ever let get away with calling me Annie.

"Yeah, yeah," I say. "But now you owe me pie," I demand with a grin of my own.Tommy laughs.

"You really are something else, Anna."
