I dozed off the instant I fell on the bed. I woke up at the sound of Jake having his shower. Ok now I had to think of something to make it up to him. Breakfast! Eggs, bacon and black coffee. I ran up to the kitchen and made our regular meal. I thought of taking the day off today from office. Once I was done with the cooking, I laid out the breakfast on our two-seater dining table.
I turned and saw Jake all ready for the day. And he just left. Without saying any words, without looking at me, just like that.
I shouldn't even bother to do something for him. It’s always like this. I'm naturally and conveniently blamed for everything that happens. If he has work it’s taken that I have to understand, but when I have work, no, nothing like that. Because he doesn't even consider my work important. I work, I look after this house, I pick up his dirty socks, I bother calling up his mother whereas he doesn't even give a shit about her.
Screw it. I was done with letting Jake mess up my head. I was done with doing things to mak ehim happy. I was done with his mood swings.
I got dressed for work. LITERALLY. I wore my deep neck red short dress, I gave my hair soft curls at the end, dabbed on some make up. I was in a mood to look sexy, just for myself. To hell with what Jake, Elizabeth or as a matter of fact anybody else thinks. I wore my black stilettos. It was over the top for the day but screw what people think.
I looked hot. After ages. That red dress defined and brought out my ass. That deep neck was perfect, revealing just the right amount of cleavage required. I walked down the street, and I was a head turner, almost everyone stared at me. I went to my car and drove off to work. I ddin't care about being late, I just didn't want to care about anything today. I parked my car and rode up till my floor in the elevator. I walked up till my cabin, there again, everyone was stared. I loved this attention. The attention which I was receiving after years.
Lanie walked through my door. "You look sexy. Wait, no, forget sexy, you spell SEX. What's got in to you?" she said handing out my coffee and muffins.
"Jake. I'm done with being sappy. We are going wardrobe shopping for me today. I'm in a mood to splurge all the money dad left me, enough with saving money for dreams which are not going to be fulfilled."
"Woah, woah... wait wait. What did I just hear?" she asked.
"You heard everything, don't make me repeat. And we are going clubbing tonight. I don't care if you have a little bump, you are coming with me. I'm going to get sloshed up and screw some random guy, you can have orange juice only."
Lanie sat there. Jaw dropped. I couldn't believe I was saying all of this. I put my fingers under her chin and closed her open mouth. She gulped down and cleared her throat.
'What happened between you two? Answer me."
I explained her the entire story.
"Isn't there a wee bit of over reaction?" she asked me.
"I thought you understood me.''
"I do, I do, but have you tried speaking to Jake?"
"Has he ever tried of sitting down and hearing me out once? Innumerable times I've had to suck up alone at home when Jake was tangled with his work, but when I am busy with mine, he expects me to apologize." I gulped down all my coffee at once and continued. "See I know marriage isn't some fairytale, and its all about adjustments and stuff, I've heard this bull shit long enough, against all odds, you just wish sometimes that you can live any romantic story played by Julia Roberts and Richard Gere."
"Aww, darling, we are taking the day off after lunch. You are 25. Live your age, stop taking that guy's crap in your head. He is probably venting out all his anger on you." Lanie consoled me.
Lexie barged in with a vase full of red roses with a note.
"Who ever loved that loved not at first sight?"
-Your Secret Admirer.
Oh lord. He just quoted Shakespeare. For a moment I thought my admirer was Jake. But no, he would never do such gestures.
"You have a secret admirer? A fucking secret admirer?" Lanie exclaimed after snatching and reading the note.
"Yeah, just a stalker who quoted Shakespeare." I said.
"Elizabeth has called you to her office." Lexie said and left. I finished my muffin and went to Elizabeth's office.
"My God, are you out of your mind, this is an office and not some random club.'' she said staring at me.
"I felt like wearing this." I said as I couldn't think of anything else.
"Whatever, you have a lunch meeting with Ted at 2, again, he is going to hand you out the contract and discuss minor details. It shouldn't take you long, I want you back by 3. I have some work for you. And leave now."
"I actually wanted the day off after lunch." I squeaked.
"You may leave after 4. Go now." Elizabeth said as she got busy with her phone.
Elizabeth had just given me a day off. Half-day I meant.
I finished off my work and left for lunch at 1:45. I reached the restaurant by 1:55.
Out of nowhere a hand grabbed me by my waist and the other hand held my neck. It was Ted.
Our lips were just an inch apart...
